Purpose: This study investigated medication regimen complexity, social support and belief about medicine as factors related to medication adherence, and tried to use it as evidence for intervention in improving medication adherence.
Methods: The subjects of this study were 143 hemodialysis patients hospitalizing or outpatienting of two hospital located in Dae-gu city. Data was collected through a self-report questionnaires, containing items on general characteristics, social support, belief about medicine and medication adherence. Data about medication regimen complexity was collected through a researcher. The SPSS/WIN Statistics was used for data analysis including descriptive analysis, t-test, ANOVA, and scheffé test, Pearson''s correlation coefficients and hierarchical regression.
Results: In hierarchical regression analysis, factors affecting medication adherence were social support and belief about medicine. A positive correlation was observed between medication adherence and social support, belief about medicine. The total explanatory power of the regression model was 39.5%.
Conclusion: Social support and belief about medicine can be effective strategies to positively change medication adherence in patients with hemodialysis. It is essential to develop nursing intervention program to increase hemodialysis patients’ social support and belief about medicine.
