Purpose: The aim of this study was to identify the factors affecting the nursing intention of emerging infectious disease patients by preliminary nurses based on theory of rational action.
Methods: The participants were 127 preliminary nurses at a department of nursing of K university in Kyungpook. The data were collected from March 25 to April 1, 2022. Descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffé’s test, Pearson’s correlation, and regression analysis were used for data analysis.
Results: The mean of attitude, subjective norms, nursing intention on emerging infectious disease patients were 30.60±5.49, 30.17±6.38, and 69.19±8.97, respectively. Nursing intention was significantly different according to parents’ education level (t=3.23, p=.043), major satisfaction (t=5.91, p=.004), medical personnel in the family (t=2.30, p=.023). Nursing intention had significantly positive correlation to attitude (r=.44, p<.001) and subjective norms (r=.37, p <.001). Variables that significantly affect nursing intention are attitude (β=.29, p=.006) and major satisfaction of nursing (β=-.24, p=.003), and had a 31% explanatory power.
Conclusion: This study suggests that Development and application of programs on positively changing attitudes and increasing major satisfaction toward patients with emerging infectious diseases in nursing school or hospital should be needed.
