Purpose: The purpose of this study is to study the distribution pattern of cholinergic amacrine cells in the diurnal Mongolian gerbil retina.
Methods: The localization of choline acetyltransferase-immunoreactive(ChAT-IR) cells in the gerbil retina were investigated using immunocytochemistry and confocal microscopy. Cell density of ChAT-IR cells were quantitatively analyzed.
Results: ChAT-IR cells were present in the inner nuclear layer and in the ganglion cell layer, and the processes of these cells form two distinct narrow bands in the inner plexiform layer as previously reported in various animals. The average density of ChAT-IR cells in the ganglion cell layer was 1,242±111 cells/mm2 and 1,487±257 cells/mm2 in the inner nuclear layer showing that the number of ChAT-IR cells in the inner nuclear layer was higher than that of the ganglion cell layer. The cholinergic amacrine cells in the gerbil retina contained calcium-binding protein calretinin, but not calbindin-D28K or parvalbumin.
Conclusions: The distributional pattern show that cholinergic amacrine cells in the gerbil retina are similar to those of other animals, the results of the expression of calcium-binding proteins in cholinergic amacrine * A thesis submitted to the Council of the Graduate School of Kyungpook National University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in june 2023
cells are species-specific. The
cholinergic amacrine cells are known to play key roles in the motion detection mechanisms in retina, and thus the present study in gerbil retina might provide better information for further physiological studies of diurnal animal model.
