The unmanaged grid-connected PV system is difficult to manage and can be left unattended for a long time if it breaks down because it is relatively restricted to install expensive monitoring systems. Thus in this study, we developed a low-cost remote monitoring system for small-sized PV systems. This monitoring system equipped with a failure detection algorithm based on simulation is an active system that accurately predicts the power output under normal operating conditions, and also recognizes and notifies the failure when the actual power generation is abnormally low. To lower the cost, we used SBC as a data server by edge computing and designed a monitoring system using the open-source software openHAB. Also, we used an open-API(ground weather observation data) provided by the KMA (Korea meteorological administration) for free to get hourly weather data (Horizontal radiation, outdoor temperature, wind speed, etc.) for simulation analysis. The Shewhart control chart was used as a benchmark for fault detection, where the ratio of the measured power generation to simulated generation was set as the observed value. As a result of the verification test for actual grid-connected PV systems, the monitoring system can identify the occurrence of abnormal operating conditions like open-circuit, partial shading, etc.system failures in real-time, such as open circuit, short circuit, partial shading, etc.
