Purpose : The aim of this study was to understand the clinical nurses’ patient advocacy and identify the influencing factors based on theory of patient advocacy.
Methods : The subjects of this study were 173 clinical nurses working in two university hospitals in D city, South Korea. Data were collected using structured self-reporting questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics, Mann-Whitney U test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson’s correlation coefficients, and hierarchical multiple regression analysis with IBM SPSS 26.0 program.
Results : Among the demographic characteristics, sex was found to be an influencing factor of patient advocacy. As a macrosocial antecedent, the hospital ethical climate was found to be an influencing factor of patient advocacy. For the microsocial antecedents, human rights sensitivity and patient vulnerability were found to be influencing factors of patient advocacy. The final model explained 35.6% of variance of clinical nurses’ patient advocacy.
Conclusion : Considering the findings of this study, it is needed to prepare a system to improve the ethical climate of hospitals, develop the program strengthening nurses’ human rights sensitivity, and further help improve the relationship between nurses and patients.
