Purpose: This study was aimed to explore the burnout experiences of insurance review nurses working in advanced general hospitals and general hospitals in South Korea.

Methods: Data were collected from April to May 2021 using the focus group interview method. Subjects of this study were 19 insurance review nurses with at least one year of experience working as insurance review nurses in South Korea. These collected data were analyzed using content analysis method based on the Downe-Wamboldt''s procedures.

Results: Causes of burnout experienced by insurance review nurses were divided into three categories (intrapersonal factors, interpersonal factors, and job factors), eight subcategories (Feeling of insufficient competence in a insurance review, closed mind in a limited space, other departments that do not do their job, harsh words and deeds that ignore me, insurance cuts controling my work performance, stuffy mind chased by the billing date, system not equipped, and question with no answer), and 23 causes. The impact of burnout experienced by insurance review nurses was divided into three categories (impact on personal life, impact on interpersonal relationships, and impact on work), five subcategories (experiencing mental and physical symptoms, Another victim: my family, withdrawn me, wearing a mask, decreased work performance), and 15 concepts.

Conclusion: Causes of burnout of insurance review nurses and effects of such burnout on nurses were vividly described. Results of this study can be used as basic data for strategy development to prevent and solve burnout problem of insurance review nurses in South Korea. Based on this study, it is important to develop a programs and policies to solve the burnout problem of insurance review nurses in the future.
