본 논문은 제인 오스틴(Jane Austen)이 『노생거 사원(Northanger Abbey)』(1817)과 『엠마(Emma)』(1816)에서 묘사하는 영국 사원(English abbey)의 의미를 살펴보고, 이를 통해 근대 영국 사회 내 고딕(Gothic)의 위치를 영국의 국가주의적(English nationalism) 맥락에서 고찰하고자 한다. 오스틴은 과거에 대한 향수를 일으키는 옛 수도원을 영국의 두 신사인 틸니 장군(General Tilney)과 나이틀리(Mr. Knightley)의 집으로 설정함으로써 국가의 과거와 미래를 그리는 서로 다른 두 가지 양상을 탐구한다.
제 1장은 과거에 대한 18세기 영국인들의 복잡한 시각을 그들이 고딕 전통(Gothic heritage)을 해석한 관점과 연결하여 분석한다. 또한 사원과 영국 국가주의 발전의 역사적 그리고 사회적 의미를 추적한다. 과거를 향한 서로 상충적인 시각과 더불어 근대 사회의 중요한 정신이었던 개량(improvement)사상은 근대 영국의 변화하는 풍경(landscape)에 대한 이해를 풍부하게 해준다. 오스틴은 두 신사가 각자의 사원을 사유 재산(private property)으로써 관리하는 모습을 묘사하면서 개량의 두 양상?세련(refinement)과 생산성(productivity)?을 고찰한다. 이를 통해 고딕은 근대 영국을 재평가하게 된다.
제 2장에서는 오스틴이 틸니 장군과 그의 집을 통해 과도한 사익 추구로 인한 근대의 부패를 비판하고 있음을 강조한다. 호화스러운 개량에도 불구하고 노생거 사원은 근대 영국 사회가 당대 유행하던 공포 문학에서 반영하는 의미로 고딕(gothic)적임을 증명한다. 가장 근대적인 사원은 압제적인 가부장이 어린 소녀들을 위협하는 가장 고딕적인 공간으로 드러난다. 오스틴은 자본 중심 사회에서 지주이자 국가의 군사적 수호자인 장군이 가장 타락한 인물임을 강조함으로써 근대 사회의 취약성을 고발한다.
제 3장은 오스틴이 나이틀리와 그의 던웰 사원(Donwell Abbey)을 통해 이상적인 사회적 공동체를 그리고 있음을 주장한다. 방대한 사유 재산의 경관을 개선하고 육체 노동의 흔적을 감추려고 했던 당대 호화스러운 풍경 조경(gardening) 유행에 영향을 받지 않은 소박한 사원은 진실된 “영국성”(Englishness)의 상징으로 묘사된다. 나이틀리는 근대 농부이자 자신이 속한 공동체를 위해 열심히 일하는 이상적인 지주이다. 땅의 생산성(productivity)을 증진하는 것과 연관된 그의 개량은 공공의 이익(public good)을 추구한다. 나이틀리는 새로운 이상적인 영국의 국가적 정체성(English national identity)의 화신으로써 노르만 침공(Norman invasion)과 부패한 근대성을 특징짓는 프랑스적 가치의 영향을 받기 이전 고딕 과거의 고대 미덕을 상징한다. 이를 통해 그는 상호존중과 보살핌의 공동체에 기초한 개인들 간의 보다 수평적인 관계에 초점을 맞춘 근대 국가 형성 과정에 참여하게 된다.
마지막 4장에서는 오스틴이 두 소설에서 고대 사원을 중요한 배경으로 설정함으로써 영국 국가주의 발전 과정에서 일어나는 과거와 현재 사이의 변증법적 움직임(dialectical movement)을 고찰하고 있음을 밝힌다. 작가가 제시하는 나이틀리와 엠마의 평등한 관계는 도덕적인 근대 가정과 국가를 확립하는 데 있어서 여성의 역할이 중요해지고 있음을 반영하고 있다.

This thesis explores the place of the Gothic in modern England by examining Jane Austen’s portrayal of the English abbey in Northanger Abbey (1817) and Emma (1816) within the context of English nationalism. By establishing the ancient abbeys which evoked nostalgic feelings as the home of two English gentlemen, General Tilney and Mr. Knightley, Austen investigates two different ways of imagining the past and the future of the nation. Chapter One examines the eighteenth-century English people’s complicated view toward their past in terms of interpreting their Gothic heritage, key to defining a modern sense of the nation. It also traces the historical and social meanings of the historical place held by the ancient abbeys and the development of English nationalism. Conflicting and conflated views of the ancient past in conjunction with the modern ethic of improvement complicate understandings of the changing landscape of modern England. Austen examines the two sides of improvement?refinement and productivity?by depicting how the two gentlemen manage their respective abbeys as private property. By doing so, the Gothic is revisited to re-evaluate modern England.
Chapter Two reveals how Austen criticizes modern corruption driven by excessive pursuit of private interests through General Tilney and his home. Northanger Abbey, despite its luxurious improvement by the General, reflects how “gothic” modern England is in the pejorative sense of the term as reflected in the popular literature of terror of the time. The most modern abbey turns out to be the most gothic space with a tyrannical male figurehead who terrorizes young heroines. Austen further reveals the vulnerability of modern society by emphasizing how the landed, military defender of the nation is in fact the most corrupted individual in a money-driven society.
Chapter Three shows how Austen presents Mr. Knightley’s Donwell Abbey as an ideal community. The unpretentious Abbey is represented as the emblem of true “Englishness” unadulterated by the fashionable new vogue of landscape gardening for improving the view of extensive private ownership and displace any signs of physical labor. Mr. Knightley is a modern farmer and an ideal landlord who works hard for his community. His improvement which is concerned with raising the productivity of his lands serves the public good. As the embodiment of a new ideal of the English national identity, he embodies the ancient virtues of the Gothic past predating the Norman invasion and foreign French values characterizing a corrupt modernity. By doing so, he participates in forming a modern nation which is anchored in more horizontal relationships between individuals based on a community of mutual respect and care.
Chapter Four concludes that Austen examines the dialectical movement between past and present in the development of English nationalism by having the abbeys serve as the backdrop to these two novels. Austen’s portrayal of an equal partnership between Mr. Knightley and Emma reflects the growing importance of women’s role in forging a morally secure modern home and nation.
