현대인들은 외모에 관심을 갖고 타인에게 매력적이고 호감을 줄 수 있
도록 자신의 외모관리에 신경을 쏟고 있다. 또한 외모가 개인의 사회적
성공을 위한 중요 요소로 인식됨에 따라 다양한 외모관리행동이 나타나
고 있다. 남을 평가하거나 자신을 표현하는 과정에서 외모를 중시하는
사회, 문화적 분위기는 뷰티산업의 동향에서 잘 확인되고 있다. 이러한
사회적 현상속에서 외모관리행동에 관한 활발한 연구가 이루어지고 있으
나 인간행동에 영향을 주는 심리적인 요인에 관한 구체적 분석은 미미한
실정이다.
본 연구는 개인의 체면 및 가치성향이 소비자들의 외모관리행동에 미치
는 영향을 파악하기 위해 확장된 계획행동이론을 외모행동에 적용하였
다. 그래서 연구모형은 체면지향, 운명순응, 외모주의와 같은 주관적 규
범과 가치관이 외모관리행동의 의도성이라고 할 수 있는 외모관심에 영
향을 미치고, 외모관심이 다시 외모관리행동에 영향을 미치는 매개경로
형태로 설계하였다. 그리고 사회비교이론과 자기 불일치의 이론을 경유
하여 외모인식이 외모관심과 외모관리행동의 관계를 조절할 것이라는 조
절된 매개효과 모형을 최종모형으로 설정하였다. 가설의 검증은 구조방정식 모형을 적용하였고, 통계프로그램은 SPSS
ver. 26, AMOS ver. 24를 사용하였으며 설문 응답자는 부산 지역에 거주
하는 341명이었다. 실증분석에 앞서 2차 요인구조의 종속변인을 1차 요인
구조로 변환하여 측정모형의 적합도를 높였고 분석결과는 다음과 같다.
첫째, 체면지향, 운명순응 그리고 외모주의는 외모관심에 유의한 영향
을 미치는 것으로 확인되었다. 또한 외모관심이 외모관리행동에도 유의
한 영향을 미치고 있는 것으로 나타났다.
둘째, 유의성이 검정된 직접효과의 경로를 종합하면, ‘체면지향 → 외
모관심 → 외모관리행동’, ‘운명순응 → 외모관심 → 외모관리행동’, ‘외모
주의 → 외모관심 → 외모관리행동’ 등 3개 매개경로가 성립되어 부트스
트래핑(Bootstrapping) 검증(최대우도법, bootsrap 1,000회 실시, 95% 수
준의 편파-교정 신뢰구간)을 실시하였다. 분석결과 3개 매개경로 모두
유의하게 나타나 매개효과가 있음이 확인되었다.
셋째, 연구모형의 평가를 위하여 3개의 부분매개모형을 경쟁모형으로
설정하여 연구모형과 chi-square 차이분석을 실시하였는데, 연구모형과
의 쌍대비교에서 연구모형의 적합도가 우수한 것으로 나타나서 직접효과
를 통해 확인된 3개의 매개경로는 모두 완전매개임이 확인되었다.
넷째, 조절된 매개효과 검증을 위하여 조절변인인 외모인식의 점수를
기준으로 평균이상 집단과 평균이하 집단으로 구분하여 다중집단분석을
실시하고, 동시에 상호작용항을 구성하여 간접경로의 유의성을 확인하는
Ping 방식을 통해 조절된 매개효과를 검증하였다. 분석결과, 두 종류의
방법 모두에서 조절된 매개효과는 없는 것으로 나타나 가설은 기각되었
다.
본 연구에서 얻어진 결론은 크게 두 가지로 요약된다. 하나는 외모행
동성의 검정에서 확장된 계획행동모형의 유효성이 확인되었다는 점이다. 즉, 외모행동성에서 행동의도에 해당하는 외모관심에 영향을 미치는 선
행요인으로 체면지향, 운명순응, 외모주의가 유의함이 확인되었고, 다시
외모관심은 외모관리행동에 영향을 미치는 것으로 검정되었다는 것이다.
이러한 결과로부터 시대의 변화로 인해 사회문화적 특성을 가지고 있는
외모관리행동이 주변인의 의식에서 벗어나 개인의 만족이나 사회적 성취
를 목적으로 하는 것으로 바뀌었다는 사실을 확인할 수 있다. 다른 하나
는 외모인식이라는 조절효과를 추가함으로써 외모관심이 외모관리행동으
로 이어지는 반응경로에서 외모인식이 조절역할을 할 것이라고 하는 조
절된 매개효과의 가설이 기각되었다는 점이다. 이는 사람들은 자신의 외
모와는 상관없이 외모에 관심을 가지고 외모행동을 하는 것을 알 수 있
으며 이러한 현상은 자신의 개성표현의 욕구에서 비롯되었으며 멋을 부
리고 외모를 가꾸는 것을 스스로 즐기고 있다고 해석할 수 있다. 따라서
마케팅 전략 수립 시 외모의 선입견이 아닌 여성들의 특성과 여건을 충
분히 감안한 차별화된 접근성이 필요하다는 사실이다.
산업적 측면에서 이러한 결과는 외모관심과 외모관리행동에 대한 체면
지향, 운명순응, 외모주의의 경로모형과 외모인식의 조절된 매개효과를 검
정하여 외모행동의 경로를 밝힘으로써 소비자 행동의 예측변인으로서 문
화맥락의 중요성을 확인하였다는 데에 그 의의가 있다.
