The purpose of this study was to investigate factors affecting on exercise adherence of male office workers. These factors were based on previous studies and self-determination theory by Deci and Ryan and to analyze structure equation model by building a hypothetical model and verifying the fit of the model.
For data collection, the questionnaire was executed with 257 male workers working in 15 small-sized companies of G, H, and S gun. Date analysis was performed using SPSS/WIN 23.0 and the AMOS 21.0 program to verify the fit of the hypothetical model and identify the direct and indirect effect of variables on exercise adherence for male office workers.
The results were as follows.
1) For the fit of hypothetic model, χ2=51.53(p<.001) and χ2/df=2.57 were found to be inadequate, while GFI (.95), AGFI (.90), RMR (.01), RMSEA(.08), NFI(.95), TLI (.94) and CFI (.97) were found to be adequate. Therefore the model was selected as the final model that supports 9 hypothesis.
2) In the final model, psychological need satisfaction in exercise (β=.52, p<.001) and autonomous motivation (β=.33, p<.001) had a significant effect on the exercise adherence for male office workers. However, autonomous support (β=.03, p=.695) and perceived exercise barriers (β=-.02, p=.723) did not have a significant effect. The psychological need satisfaction in exercise and autonomous motivation had a significant direct effect on the exercise adherence for male office workers. The explanatory power of these variables was 62.0%.
3) Psychological need satisfaction in exercise (β=.66, p<.001) had significant effect on the autonomous motivation. However, autonomous motivation (β=.01, p=.861) and perceived exercise barriers (β=-.09, p=.115) did not have a significant effect. The explanatory power of these variables was 51.6%.
4) Autonomous motivation (β=.44, p<.001) and perceived exercise barriers (β=-.42, p<.001) had significant effect on the Psychological need satisfaction in exercise. The explanatory power of these variables was 44.6%.
The prediction model of exercise adherence in male office workers constructed through this study is recommended to be used as a model to predict and explain on exercise adherence for male office workers. In addition, it is required to develop an exercise adherence program by improving psychological need satisfaction in exercise and by strengthening autonomous motivation for male office workers.
