A large number of pharmaceuticals are used in daily life and mainly found in wastewater which is discharged into the aquatic system. Since pharmaceuticals as emerging pollutants are frequently detected in surface water, continuous monitoring for occurrence of pharmaceuticals in aquatic environment are required. Some of the pharmaceuticals are bioaccumulative and potentially disrupt biological systems. The aim of this study was to find the characteristics of bioaccumulation and biotransformation of pharmaceuticals of pharmaceuticals through exposure test to Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes), one of the freshwater indicators. Eleven pharmaceuticals (atenolol (ATN), caffeine (CFE), carbamazepine (CMZ), diclofenac (DCF), fluoxetine (FLX), irbesartan (IBS), losartan (LST), mefenamic acid (MFA), metoprolol (MTP), naproxen (NPX), venlafaxine (VFX)) were selected through the scoring system considering detection frequency, measured concentration and Log Dow in surface water. As a result, eleven test compounds were quantitatively detected via target screening and quantified for the calculation of bioaccumulation factor (BAF). Calculated BAF was range of 0.02 ? 30.7 whereas among them carbamazepine, fluoxetine and mefenamic acid showed higher than 1. Fourteen metabolites from six parent compounds were tentatively identified via suspect/non-target screening as follows: atenolol acid and ATN256 from atenolol, carbamazepine 10,11-epoxide, CMZ210, 10,11-dihydro-10,11-dihydroxycarbamazepine and iminostilbene from carbamazepine, 4’-hydroxydiclofenac from diclofenac, norfluoxetine from fluoxetine, α-hydroxymetoprolol, metoprolol acid and O-desmethylmetoprolol from metoprolol and N-desmethylvenlafaxine, VFX294A and VFX294B from venlafaxine. The major mechanisms to form metabolites in Oryzias latipes were oxidation and demethylation. The findings on concentrations in fish and formed metabolites provide information on bioaccumulation and major metabolic pathways for emerging pharmaceuticals which are often occurring in domestic river waters.
