Purpose: The aim of this study was to identify the effects of handoff education using concept mapping and PASS-BAR(HECPAR) for new nurses.
Methods: This was a randomized controlled trial in a tertiary hospital with 41 new nurses from July 6th to August 31st 2019. Twenty two new nurses were randomly allocated into an experimental and control group, respectively. The experimental group were received a standardized education using concept mapping and PASS-BAR for 1 hour, then individualized monitoring for a week. The control group continued usual informal handoffs. The outcomes included clinical reasoning competence, handoff ability, and self-efficacy of handoff. Pre-test and post-test assessed clinical reasoning competence, handoff ability and self-efficacy of hadnoff at intervals of two weeks. The data are analyzed by Mann-Whitney U test and independent t-test using the SPSS WIN 26.0 program.
Result: The experimental group improved significantly in clinical reasoning competence(z=-2.29, p=.022), handoff ability(z=-2.23, p=.026), self-efficacy of handoff(t=3.47, p=.001) versus the control group.
Conclusion: Handoff education using Concept Mapping and PASS-BAR has been found a effectiveness in improving clinical reasoning competence, handoff ability, and self-efficacy of handoff. It also confirmed that education is possible by incorporating Concept Mapping, PASS-BAR, and mentoring. Therefore, it is believed that it can be used as an effective educational intervention to improve the handoff capability of new nurses.
