The purpose of this study is to look into the narrative studies of a childless middle aged woman''s life and to understand the experience. The participants'' experiences were examined in three - dimensional narrative inquiries of time, sociality, and location. The research method was followed by the procedure of the narrative exploration method presented by Clandinin and Connelly. The study examined three childless middle-aged women aged between 40 or older to 59 and under who were married for 10 years or more, all of whom voluntarily participated in-depth interview. The data collection was made through four to five in-depth interviews between January and April 2019. The interviews were recorded and described with their consent.
The results of this study reconstructs each study participant''s autobiographical narratives. The six topics presented by the result of these studies are "Growing up as an obedient daughter", "Doing what is best in the given reality", "Meeting and marrying a spouse who can embrace and bear one another", "Living with conflicts in a marriage without children", "Growth through conflict" and "Being satisfied with the present state". Based on these studies, the following shows the common theme between the studies interpreting the meaning of life of the participants by drawing an analogy to Andersen''s The Ugly Duckling.
First, in ''The Birth of an Ugly Baby Duckling,'' the study participants dealt with the loneliness and traumas of childhood experiences not with despair and rebellion but with adaptation and perseverance. The causes and circumstances of such experiences were all different, but the study participants overcame the situation rather than dealing it with frustration in such experiences.
Second, in ''Conflict in an alienated life from society,'' the participants lived a childless middle - aged life unlike others in society. Just because they did not have children, they experienced conflicts such as but not limited to alienation, excessive interferences, negative and distorted views. The circumstances of such conflicts differed depending on each individual''s preferences, but the fact that they lived a different life from others caused them to experience various conflicts in their lives.
Third, in "Growth through conflicts," the study participants have experienced this growth through overcoming their own conflicts. They devoted themselves to their work and what they wanted to do while others were looking after their children. For these participants, the conflict they have experienced initialized into a time of self-understanding and introspection.
Fourth, in "Rebirth as a Swan," the study participants were no longer living in conflict, but rather now in acceptance and realized that their existence alone was worthy enough to be loved for who they were. They were content with the current life they held and even dreamt of a better, hopeful future.
As such, the lives of childless middle-aged women continuously evolved to the point where the idea of "accepting their self-worthiness as is" was recreated and it kept on redesigning in themselves through a process of self-understanding, self-reflection and self-growth.
This study provides an insight into the lives of the participants through both verbal and non-verbal descriptions in this in-depth interview. It is meaningful that the participants in the study have increased their understanding of themselves and their social understanding. It is also expected that a counseling intervention strategy for childless middle-aged woman can be devised and that a foundation will provide measures to create self-help groups which will support and provide support for each other''s difficulties so that they can live an open-minded and conative life.
