The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of group art
therapy program on ego resilience of adolescents with emotional?
behavioral support needs, and to help adolescents to grow up healthily
without emotional?behavioral disorder by improving ego resilience. To
this end, this study organized every session into group art therapy
based on therapeutic factors of group art therapy program and
effectiveness of media on research subjects.
This study selected 12 7th graders of B Middle School located in A-si
as the subject of this study based on the selection standard of rating
scale for students’ emotional·behavioral characteristics(AMPQ-Ⅲ)
among the groups with emotional·behavioral support needs. 6 students
were randomly placed in experimental group and control group and
total 12 sessions of 90-minute group art therapy program were
conducted on the experimental group twice a week.
To verify the effectiveness of the program, this study conducted a
quantitative analysis by carrying out the ego resilience test before and
after the program on both the experimental group and control group. For
data processing, this study verified the effectiveness through a
non-parametric test, the Mann-Whitney’s U-test, using SPSS/WINProgram
(version 18.0).
To sum up, the results of this study are as follows.
First, it was identified that group art therapy program makes a significant
effect on improving ego resilience of adolescents with emotional?behavioral
support needs. Meaning, it was identified that group art therapy program
is effective on improving ego resilience of adolescents with emotional?
behavioral support needs than the control group.
Secondly, it was identified that group art therapy program makes
positive effect on positive thought, problem solving, intimate behavior,
and emotional adjustment among subfactors of ego resilience. Meaning,
it was identified that subfactors of ego resilience of the experimental
group who participated in group art therapy program have improved
significantly. This signifies that group art therapy program is effective
on improving subfactors of ego resilience.
According to the result, it can be considered that group art therapy
program contributed to the improvement in ego resilience of adolescents
with emotional?behavioral support needs. This signifies that group art
therapy program helped adolescents to express their thoughts and emotions
naturally, helped them to understand other people’s feelings, provided
emotional stability, and helped positive interaction between group members.
Also, it can be seen that the program served as a momentum that brought
changes in positive thinking by showing their emotion and potential during
the process of completing their works.
Therefore, it was verified that group art therapy program is effective on
improving ego resilience of adolescents with emotional?behavioral support
needs, and it is considered that the results of this study can be used a
data in school and in the counseling field.
