One of the earliest of symbiotic relationship between rugose corals and stromatoporoids occurs in the Late Ordovician Xiazhen Formation at Zhuzhai in the JCY (Jiangshan-
Changshan-Yushan) triangle region of South China.

Among the 12 genera of stromatoporoids, only two of clathrodictyids (Clathrodictyon and Ecclimadictyon) hosted solitary rugose corals, Tryplasma and Streptelasma. This association occurs mainly in reef and related facies in the lower part, and became more common in the upper part of the formation. It was initiated by larval settlement of the rugose corals on the growth surface of the stromatoporoids.

Rugose corals may have physically been protected within the
stromatoporoid skeletons and benefited in feeding activity while
growth of stromatoporoids was harmed by decreasing filter feeding surface. The intergrowth associations between rugose
corals and stromatoporoids reported in this study from the
Xiazhen Formation indicate that the Late Ordovician was the
period of the ‘pioneer stage’ on development of complex
ecological associations of early metazoans.
