현대사회의 발달은 도시의 밀집화, 다양화로 현대인들에게 많은 이로움을 주었지만 심화된 경쟁으로 정신적 스트레스가 과중되고, 도시화에 따른 유해 환경 요인들이 현대인의 건강을 위협하고 하고 있다. 이에 따라 건강에 대한 관심이 높아지면서 휴양, 레크레이션, 건강 유지 등을 위한 리조트 참여가 증가되고 건강을 중요시 하는 라이프스타일로 인하여 신 개념 융합 관광 형태인 의료관광이 많은 관심을 받으며 진행 되고 있다.
이는 리조트 산업에도 영향을 미치어 휴양 및 휴식의 제공을 목적으로 일생생활권에서 벗어나 자연경관이 좋은 지역에 위치하며 레크리에이션과 여가 활동을 위한 다양한 시설을 필요로 하게 되었다. 뿐만 아니라 건강검진, 미용, 영양관리, 다이어트, 질병치료, 심리치료 등의 의료서비스 시설에서 치유활동을 할 수 있는 포괄적 서비스에 대한 요구가 생기게 되었고, 의료서비스 시설과 휴양시설을 포괄하는 복합의료휴양시설로 리조트의 영역이 확대되어 가고 있다. 이는 메디컬리조트라는 형태로 나타나고 있으나 공간구성과 프로그램의 복합화를 시도하는 과도기적 시점이라고 볼 수 있다.
이에 본 연구는 인간의 육체적 치료 뿐 만 아니라 정신적 사회적 치유를 통해 하나의 조화로운 상태에 도달하도록 환경구성을 돕는 치유 환경 디자인의 중요성을 파악 하고, 새로운 복합시설인 메디컬리조트의 이해의 일환으로 메디컬 리조트가 등장하게 된 배경과 발전에 대한 분석으로 기능에 따라 공간을 구분하고 정의 하였다. 또한 치유 환경 디자인의 정의와 개념을 이해하고 그 결과가 실내공간에 적용되고 활용되는 과정을 병원수준의 의료시설을 가지고 있고, 도심지 밖에 위치한 리조트 사례를 통해, 조사 비교 분석하여 표현특성을 도출 하였으며 이를 적용하기 위한 연구 대상으로 국내 도심지 밖에 위치한 리조트를 선정하여 공간계획을 다음과 같이 제시하였다.
첫째, 치유 환경과 디자인이 유기적 결합은 레크리에이션, 여가활동 등의 휴양서비스 제공과 함께 다양한 의료서비스를 제공하는 복합의료시설인 메디컬리조트에 치유활동을 극대화 시키는 적합한 요소로 치유 환경 디자인을 제시하였다.
둘째, 정신적·육체적 치유의 극대화는 치유 환경의 반복적 교감을 통해서 심신의 치유를 가져올 수 있기 때문에 언제 어디서나 치유 환경을 접하고 체험하고 느끼면서 치유 환경과 교감을 할 수 있는 디자인 표현으로 제시하였다.
따라서 메디컬 리조트의 휴양서비스를 제공하는 숙박공간과 체험 공간, 의료서비스를 제공하는 치료공간과 케어공간이 구분된 공간이 아닌 하나의 공간으로 인식 될 수 있도록 상호 연관 된 공간 구성을 통해 지속적 치유를 가져올 수 있다.
셋째, 치유 환경 디자인요소로서 공간 내에 자연형태의 모방, 비대칭적 불균형과 반복성, 공간과의 경계성으로 사람과 공간이 교감하고, 시간에 따라 변화하는 빛의 시각성, 자연요소의 유입을 통한 후각성, 자연요소 체험을 통한 촉각성으로 공간과 자연이 교감하며 지역적 특징을 고려한 디자인으로 고객 간의 어우러짐과 사회성을 높이는 가구 배열 등으로 사람과 사람사이의 교감을 할 수 있도록 하는 디자인을 제시하였다.
이처럼 치유 환경 디자인은 육체적, 정신적, 사회적 치유를 함께 가져 올 수 있는 디자인으로 충분한 역할을 할 수 있다. 분석의 틀로 사용되었던 형태성, 감각성, 공간성, 장소성의 디자인 요소가 조화를 이루어 공간에 표현될 때 다른 메디컬리조트 보다 치유를 극대화 시킬 수 있는 환경이 만들어 질것이고 그것이 메디컬리조트의 경쟁력이 된다.
본 연구는 치유 환경 디자인 표현특성을 중심으로 메디컬리조트 공간에 대해 고찰 하였으나 치유 환경 디자인의 적용이 특정한 공간에 집중되어 표현되는 것을 넘어서 다양한 공간에 표현되어 치유 공간을 구성하는 중요한 요소가 될 것으로 기대 되는 바 앞으로도 메디컬 리조트에 대한 많은 연구가 이루어 져야 할 것이다.

Development of modern society brings many benefits to modern people through urban crowding & diversification, but their mental stress becomes overloaded due to the deepening competition, and harmful environment factors consequent on urbanization are threatening modern people’s health. Accordingly, with the public concern for health rising, people’s participation in resorts for rest, recreation and health maintenance, etc. has increased, and medical tourism as a advanced concept convergence tourism form is in progress while receiving a lot of attention due to the lifestyle putting emphasis on health.
Such an aspect has an influence on even the resort industry which comes to be in need of a good location with good natural landscapes away from a daily living sphere for the purpose of providing rest and relaxation, together with diverse facilities for recreation and leisure activities. Moreover, there has been even the public demand for comprehensive service which can afford a medical service facility for physical examination, beauty treatment, nutrition management, diet, treatment of diseases, and psychotherapy, etc.; accordingly, the area of a resort is expanding into a complex clinic-resort facility encompassing medical service facilities and recreational facilities. Such a trend comes up as the form of a medical resort, but at this point in time, it could be regarded as a transitional phase of attempting at space composition and program complexation.
Hereupon, this study grasped the importance of the healing environment design which serves to environmental composition in order for people to arrive at a harmonious state not only through the physical treatment of humans but also through psycho-social healing, and classified & defined the spaces according to individual function through the analysis of the background for the emergence of a medical resort and its development as a part of the understanding of a medical resort as a new complex facility. In addition, on the basis of the data deducted by understanding the classification & definition of a medical resort by function, and the definition & concept of healing environment design, this study deducted the expression characteristics through the survey and analysis of the process of being applied and utilized to the interior space through the case of a resort with hospital-level medical facilities, which is located out of the downtown; then, this study selected a resort located out of the downtown in Korea as a research subject for applying this, and presented space planning as follows:
First, this study presented the healing environment design with the organic combination between healing environment and design as a suitable element in maximizing the healing activities of a medical resort as a complex medical facility which provides a variety of medical services, together with the provision of recreational services such as a recreation and leisure activities, etc.
Second, this study presented maximization of mental, physical healing as a design expression that makes it possible for people to commune with the healing environment while exposing themselves to, experiencing and feeling the healing environment at anytime and anywhere because maximization of mental, physical healing can bring healing to mind and body through repetitive communion(consensus) with the healing environment.
Accordingly, continuous healing is feasible through interrelated space composition so that the lodging space, and experience space providing the recreational service of a medical resort, and treatment space & care space providing medical service can be perceived as not a separated space but a united space.
Third, this study presented design elements in healing environment including an imitation of a natural form in the space, non-symmetrical imbalance & repeatability, boundary property with the space, which enable people to commune with the space, visibility of light changing over time, olfactory property through the influx of natural elements, and tactile property through experience, which enable the space and nature to have communion with each other, the design in the light of regional characteristics, which induces mingling between customers, and the design of furniture arrangement raising sociality, which induces communion between people, etc.
Like this, healing environment design can play an adequate role as the design which can bring physical, mental, social healing together. This study thinks that it is possible to create environment which can maximize the healing effect more than any other medical resort when the design elements like form, sentience, spatiality and placeness, which were used as an analytical framework, are expressed in the space by achieving harmony with each other, which becomes solid competitiveness of a medical resort.
This study considered the space of a medical resort with healing environment expression characteristics as the center; however, it is expected that healing environment design will be an important element in composing a healing space when it is expressed in diverse spaces beyond the level of expression with focus on a specific space, so there should be a lot more researches on a medical resort even for the time to come.
