Part 2. Fabrication of core-shell type polystyrene/poly(di-phenylamine) microspheres via controlled-releasing method and their electrorheology

In this study, we succeeded in coating conjugated polymer poly(diphenyl-amine) to polystyrene microspheres and the electro-rheological properties of the suspension in which the semi-conductive composite particles imparted were analyzed. The diphenylamine monomer is adsorbed onto the polystyrene surface through a π?π* stacking, and their polymer grows from the surface by added oxidant under acidic conditions. The core-shell structure of the synthesized particles was observed by SEM and TEM. The chemical structure and thermal properties were measured by FT-IR and TGA, respectively. The coated poly(diphenylamine) was dispersed in an insulating oil at a rate of 5 vol.% without additional de-doping process. The electro-rheological characteristics of the prepared ER fluid were investigated using an optical microscope and a rotational rheometer. We found the ER effect with the change of shear property and viscoelastic characteristics according to the electric field strength which is induced from the transition between conventional liquid-like state to the solid-like state.
