Sonic and supersonic jets are of interest from the point of view of fundamental fluid mechanics as well as practical applications. After chocking, the normal shocks are happened inside of the supersonic nozzle divergent section. While increasing NPR, the normal shocks are moved to at the nozzle exit and go out with more pressure. The jets are considered with the relationship of different nozzle exit pressure(Pe) and back pressure(Pb) as correct expansion, under expanded jet, over expanded jet. According to previous works, the under expanded jets are specified by its barrel shock structure, Mach disk location, jet boundary configuration, velocity decay, and supersonic length, etc., which are determined by the NPRs as well as shape of the nozzle. However, these studies are only for numerical study and there are not many real experimental studies which are contained quantitative information.

In the present study, Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) was employed to specify the jet flow field, and a color Schlieren optical method was applied to visualize the same jets. Recently, PIV technique can be possible in compressible flow or high speed conditions also by developing of camera and many visualization devices. A good comparison of the jet size from the Schlieren images with the PIV is obtained. These images are clearly showed the major features of the under-expanded jet and over-expanded jet.The hysteresis phenomena frequently occurs in the wide variety of fluid flow systems of industrial and engineering applications. Recently, the research has been substantially carried out to understand the physics of flow hysteresis. Hysteresis mainly rises during the change of pressure ratios and it influences the performance the supersonic wind tunnel. However, investigations on the hysteresis phenomena which occurred particularly inside supersonic wind tunnel are rarely studied.
