Study on Bacteriological Effects of Pollution Sources in Land on Shellfish Growing Sea Area after Rainfall

Abstract
Since 1990, the production, consumption and exportation of marine products were increased every year in Korea. Also the production, consumption and exportation of shellfish were increased every year. For these reason, Korea is making effort to increase production area of shellfish for domestic consumption and exportation.
In the shellfish growing sea area, bacteria are important hazards affect to the hygienic safety of shellfish for food consumption. The main pollution sources of the bacteria are rivers, sewage treatment plats and dwelling in land.
This study was carried out to evaluate the bacteriological effects of pollution sources in land on shellfish growing sea area after rainfall at Yangyang in Korea. Twenty eight samples were collected form pollution source in land, and 31 sea waters and 6 shellfishes were collected form shellfish growing sea area before and after rainfall. And then, the counts of coliform group, fecal coliform and Escherichia coli were evaluated.
The levels of coliform group, fecal coliform and Escherichia coli in domestic sewage of wonpori beach and Yangyang namdae stream were higher than those in other pollution sources, and the diffusion range of them to the shellfish growing sea area was also wider than those of other pollution sources after rainfall. In addition, The counts of coliform group, fecal coliform and E. coli were increased sharply at 1st day after rainfall in pollution sources in land and shellfish growing sea area, and then decreased slowly at 3rd day after rainfall, and recovered to same level as before rainfall at 5th day after rainfall.
In case of rainfall, therefore, special countermeasures and plans for sampling of seawater and shellfish should be established.
