Objectives: Adolescent internet/smartphone addiction is a social issue with an increasing trend, but there are no systematic treatment guidelines. In this study, we have implemented an group therapy using art program and evaluated its effect in adolescent internet/smartphone addiction.
Methods: Screening tests (Young''s Internet Addiction test; YIAT, Korean Smartphone Addiction Proneness Scale; SAPS) were done by students from elementary and middle schools in Daegu. Six sessions of group art therapy were done to 60 subjects; 20 students showing internet/smartphone addiction were assigned to an addiction group and 40 students to a control group. A questionnaires including sociodemographic information, Children''s Social Support Scale (SSS) and Parent-Adolescent Communication Scale (PACS) were done before the intervention. Clinical scales evaluating internet/smartphone addiction (YIAT, SAPS) and psychological disposition were also conducted before and after the intervention.
Results: There were no significant differences in sociodemographic factors between addiction group and control group. Total average of SSS and PACS was significantly higher in the control group compared to addiction group. The addiction group revealed a statistically significant decrease of SAPS and a decreasing tendency of YIAT. Both groups showed a statistically significant decrease of state anxiety and depression scores.
Conclusion: Internet/smartphone addicted adolescents showed improvements of addictive behavior, state anxiety and depression after group art therapy. Group art therapy could be considered as an alternative treatment method for adolescent internet and smartphone addiction.
