The purpose of the this study was to explore the educational needs of the family members who care for the patients in hospice palliative care units.
The research design was the focus group study which was the one of qualitative research methodology. 19 family members joined in five different focus group. Data were analyzed by qualitative content analysis by Sandelowski.
As a results, there were 21 codes, 10 sub-categories, and 5 categories. 5 categories were ‘situation of patients’, ‘care of the patient’, ‘relationship with patients’, ‘dying situation’, and ‘care of external environment’. Sub categories of ‘Situation of patients’were ‘current situation’ and ‘upcoming situation’. Sub categories of ‘care of the patient’ were ‘care of symptoms’ and ‘basic physical care’. Sub categories of ‘relationship with patients’ were ‘conversation in difficult situation with patients’ and ‘family attitudes to the patient’. Sub categories of ‘Terminal patient’ were ‘dying process’ and the‘role of family at one’s dying hour’. Sub categories of ‘care of external environment’were ‘helpful environment to patients ’ and ‘an explanation information about hospice’.
In the view of the results of this study, the future educational program for family members who care for the patients in hospice palliative care units should consisted in the contents as follows: situation of patients, practical methods which are needed in family to care for patients, relation strategies of the family members with the hospice patients, role of the family member at the moment of the dying, and introduction of the hospice and palliative care including the external environment.
