Research Objective: The purpose of this study was to knowledge, interest about osteoporosis, lifestyle, and dietary behavior of women in Jeonju area.
Research Method: The 394 subjects were selected of over 20 years old of women in Jeonju area. The questionnaires were comprised general characteristics, knowledge, interest about osteoporosis, lifestyle, and dietary behavior. Statistical data analysis was completed using SPSS v.20.0.
Research Result: The total score of the knowledge about osteoporosis of subjects was 6.21 points of a possible 12 points. The highest percent age of correct answers (84.8%) was for the question, ‘Preventive foods for osteoporos is include mushrooms, sardines and milk’ in the Prevention of osteoporosis section. The total score for interest about osteoporosis was 26.50 points of a possible 40 points.
‘Are you interested in diet’ received the highest
questionnaire average score with 3.63 point, ‘Do you know about eating female hormones’ received the lowest score with 2.87 points. The total score for lifestyle of subjects was 18.50 points of a possible 25 points. ‘I don''t smoke because it is unhealthy’ had the highest questionnaire average score with 4.34 point, and ‘Exercise regularly’ had the lowest score with 2.95 point. The total score for dietary behavior of subjects was 35.42 points of a possible 55 points. ‘Multi-grain Rice’ had the highest questionnaire average score with 3.57 point, and ‘Greasy meat’ had the lowest score with 2.93 point. Statistically significant difference was shown when osteoporosis related knowledge was analyzed according to the general characteristics, such as age(p<0.05), monthly income(p<0.01), education level(p<0.01), job(p<0.01), medical examination(p<0.01), milk intake during the childhood(p<0.05), drinking(p<0.05), smoking(p<0.01) and the osteoporosis recognition(p<0.001). Statistically significant difference was observed when interest about osteoporosis was analyzed according to the general characteristics, such as age(p<0.001), monthly income(p<0.05), medical examination(p<0.01), exercise(p<0.001), drinking(p<0.01), smoking(p<0.01), interest in health care(p<0.001) osteoporosis recognition(p<0.001), weight control experience(p<0.01), family history in osteoporosis(p<0.05), and the calcium medications(p<0.001). Statistically significant difference was observed when lifestyle of subjects was analyzed according to the general characteristics, such as age(p<0.001), religion(p<0.05), education level(p<0.05), job(p<0.05), medical examination(p<0.01), exercise(p<0.001), drinking(p<0.001), smoking(p<0.001), interest in health care(p<0.001), osteoporosis recognition(p<0.001), and the weight control experience(p<0.05). Statistically significant difference was observed when dietary behavior was analyzed according to the general characteristics, such as age(p<0.001), religion(p<0.001), monthly income(p<0.001), job(p<0.05), medical examination(p<0.001), milk intake during childhood(p<0.05), exercise(p<0.05), drinking(p<0.001), interest in health care(p<0.001), osteoporosis recognition(p<0.001), and the calcium medications(p<0.001). ‘Function of calcium’
showed a correlation between ‘General content of osteoporosis’(r=0.332, p<0.01), ‘Prevention of osteoporosis’
(r=0.481, p<0.01), ‘Interet about osteoporosis’(r=0.111,
p<0.05), ‘Lifestyle’(r=0.156, p<0.001). ‘General content of osteoporosis’ showed a correlation between ‘Prevention of osteoporosis’(r=0.449, p<0.01), ‘Interet about osteoporosis’
(r=0.100, p<0.05), ‘Dietary behavior’(r=0.109, p<0.05).
‘Prevention of osteoporosis’ showed a correlation between ‘Lifestyle’ (r=0.451, p<0.01), ‘Dietary behavior’
(r=0.507, p<0.01). ‘Lifestyle’ showed a correlation betwwen ‘Dietary behavior’(r=0.458, p<0.01).
Conclusion: The study showed that the knowledge, interest about osteoporosis, lifestyle and dietary behavior among women in Jeonju area are have correlation. With each other in conclusion, it is necessary to consider the development and implementation of systematic education programs that increase interest in osteoporosis related factors so women in Jeonju area.
