The purpose of this paper is to examine the formalization of the leaders and politics of memory in North Korean literature through the analysis of the two novels: Eternal life and Night Train. These works are a part of book collections, “Immortal History” and “Immortal Guide” that include the story of Kim Il-sung, Kim Jong-il and current the North Korean President Kim Jong-un..
The theoretical background of this research is the French historian Pierre Nora, the sociologist Maurice Halbwachs, the German Egyptologist Jan Assmann and the cultural-anthropologist Aleida Assmann. Also, the study draws upon Paul Ricoeur’s hermeneutic theory of interpretation and the theory of North Korean representation of the leaders.
To begin with, the two novels help Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il form political legitimacy. Second, the two novel played a key role in earning the images of the great general in terms of national defense. Third, the novels allow the North Korean leaderships to reinforce the relations between the leaderships and the public.
It is noted that Arduous March in the 1990s is a very important historic moment to North Korea. The North tried to use this moment to strengthen the political legitimacy through various political methods. The strengthened political legitimacy has been used for the Kim Jong-un regime’s survival. The another name of the two novel is memory, loyalty, and the North Korean style-socialism.
