ABSTRACT

Effects on Job Satisfaction of Violence Experience, Burn-out and Job Stress among 119 Rescue Workers*

This study was to define the level of violence experience, job stress, burn-out and job satisfaction according to the sociodemographic and health related characteristics, and job-related factors, and, to know the job satisfaction and its association with violence experience, job stress and burn-out. The 1,240 of 119 rescue workers were surveyed who works in 14 fire stations across the country.

The survey was conducted by self-administered questionnaires during the period from 1 March, to 30 April, 2016. The major findings of the study are as follows:

1. The score of job satisfaction according to the sociodemographic and health related characteristics were significantly lower in the group of lower age, unmarried group, no regular exercise group, poor group of subjective sleep evaluation, unhealthy group of subjective health status than their respective counterparts. From the perspective of job-related characteristics, the score of job satisfaction were significantly lower in the group of no license certification, lower position, lower job career, lower monthly income, hard group of physical burden of work, dissatisfaction group of sense of satisfaction in work, unfit group of the job, without group of consider quitting the job than their respective counterparts.

2. The score of job satisfaction according to violence experience, job stress and burn-out were significantly lower in the group of higher score of violence experience, higher score of job stress, and higher score of burn-out.

3. Concerning correlation of job satisfaction with violence experience, job stress and burn-out, the score of job satisfaction was negatively correlated with violence experience, job stress and burn-out.

4. As the result of hierarchical multiple regression analysis, it was discovered that age, leisure time, subjective sleep evaluation, subjective health status, job position, physical burden of work, sense of satisfaction in work, consider quitting the job, job stress and burn-out have a significant interrelationship with job satisfaction. Implying the high relevance to the job satisfaction, the explanatory power was initially 35.0 percent and the explanatory power was increased by 9.8 percent as job stress contents were added.

5. With the analysis of covariance structure, job stress was more influential on the job satisfaction than violence experience and burn-out. And the higher violence experience, job stress and burn-out was found to decrease job satisfaction. On the other hand, the higher the job stress and violence experience showed that the effect is higher burn-out.

The study results suggested that the job satisfaction of 119 rescue workers is so complicatedly influenced by variable factors as well as socio-demographic characteristics, health-related behaviors and job-related characteristics to a greater extent, by violence experience, job stress and burn-out. Especially, the job satisfaction was more influenced by job stress than violence experience and burn-out. Therefore, I think we need to be laid concrete measures to reduce job stress in order to promote the job satisfaction of 119 rescue workers.
