The Yeongsan River estuary, located in South Jeolla, South Korea, was altered due to the presence of the constructed sea embankment near the mouth of the estuary and recently constructed weirs in the freshwater zone. With the recent changes in its estuarine topography, algal blooms were frequently reported. Freshwater is discharged into the estuary from the sluice gates of the embankment that influences changes in the water quality. It has not been furtherly investigated on how the freshwater discharge affects the health of the marine ecosystem. The sampling was done in three stations for a 4-day period: before the freshwater discharge, during the freshwater discharge, after 1 day of the discharge, after 2 days of the discharge. WQI (water quality index), TRIX (trophic status index) and P-IBI (phytoplankton index of biotic integrity) were used to determine the ecosystem health. For P-IBI, long-term data were also utilized to determine the criteria. Low grades assessed by the indices were observed in the station near the weir while grades gradually increased for stations that are further away from the weir. Temporal pattern of grades were different depending on the indices used. For WQI and TRIX both share the same pattern, the grades decreased during the freshwater discharge and increased after the discharge while for P-IBI, the grades decreased slightly after the discharge. The results of this study suggests that P-IBI is more suitable than WQI and TRIX for evaluating the health of estuarine systems since estuaries are dynamic systems that experience variable changes in its hydrodynamics and physicochemical parameters. Moreover, P-IBI focuses on phytoplankton that are highly susceptible to changes in their environment.
