Objective
Oral health literacy is defined as ‘the degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process, and understand basic oral health information and services needs to make appropriate health decision’. The aim of this study was to develop assessment tool to measure oral health literacy for Korean adult and to establish the validity and reliability. Also the second aim was to investigate the relationship between Korean and oral health literacy.
Method
This instrument was based on Korean literacy assessment tool of the National Institute of Korean Language, Republic of Korea. Finally, 24 items of questionnaire for adult oral health literacy were selected after pilot study. The components were mainly constituted oral health information and dental treatment instruction. With the viewpoint of cognitive processes, they also were classified to three parts, realistic, deductive and critical domain. As the another viewpoint of component, they could be classified into prose and non-prose. This survey was completed with 84.3 percent respondents of 400 university students. SPSS 23.0 was employed to analyze reliability by Cronbach''s , discrimination, difficulty and effectiveness of distracters from collected data.
Result
Reliability and mean discrimination of 24 items was 0.83 and 0.48. Difficulty of 24 items was curved normal distribution. A percentage of correct answers was higher than effectiveness of distracters in all items. The higher in Korean literacy, the higher in oral health literacy(correlation coefficient, 0.74).
Conclusion
This instrument was appropriate for evaluation of oral health literacy in adults because this had high reliability and validity.
