As a modern society, crime is getting bigger and more varied and it is closely related to us. Crime is a kind of deviance and so we need to know about deviance. Students are learning about deviance in high school「SocietyㆍCulture」textbooks now. However, there is no analysis on how「SocietyㆍCulture」textbooks deal with crime and deviance. Therefore it is very important to discuss how「SocietyㆍCulture」textbooks deal with crime and deviance.
Thus, this paper analyzed five types of the 2009 revised curriculum high school「SocietyㆍCulture」textbooks now in use, published from five different publishers (Kumsung Publishing, Mirae N, Visang Education, Jihak Publishing, Chunjae Education). This allows us to identify differences among these textbooks and suggest improvements.
To achieve the goal of this research, the theoretical basis of this study is the ‘Theory of Deviant Behavior’. Then, this study find out how these theories are developing in textbooks. In this process, first, we have conducted a quantitative analysis of the ‘theoretical part’ of the textbooks, and a qualitative analysis of the ‘case part’ by own criteria. Also ‘quest activities’ part was analyzed by content type and question type.
Upon this analysis, a few conclusions have been made. First, there is a large difference in the amount of narrative in the theory part. Second, in the case part, the average score of ‘affiliation’ is the lowest and the average score of ‘reflection’ is the highest. Third, the quest activities are biased against some types, and there should be more activities for students to participate more actively.
In addition, this study has few suggestions. First, it is necessary to supplement about school violence. Because school violence is a serious offense and it is most easily encountered offenses in school. Second, it is necessary to supplement white-collar crime. It is now one of the most serious crimes in Korean society, but people lack awareness of it as a crime. Therefore, it is necessary for students learning textbooks to be aware of the seriousness of white-collar crime.
I hope these contents will be reflected in the next curriculum textbooks and students'' awareness of deviant behavior will also improve.
