Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) particles containing surface modified
halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) which have 500 - 1000 nm length and 25-50 nm inner
diameter are proposed. HNTs were purified first using freeze-drying method to avoid
aggregation which may have potential of undesirable experimental results. 3-
methacryloxypropyl trimethoxysilane (MPTMS) was used as a linker between HNTs
and PNIPAM because MPTMS can be chemically modified on the surface of HNTs and
also used as a co-monomer of PNIPAM synthesis, resulted from the trimethoxysilane
groups and vinyl groups. These organic/inorganic hybrids have size of 1.5 um length
and have shape of nanotube but properties of PNIPAM, giving inner space of nanotubes
as a container of materials and outer polymer showing temperature responsive property.
The volume of HNT/PNIPAM particles can be changed by controlling temperature at
26 ºC, resulting in improved controlled-release characteristics compared to pure HNTs
and PNIPAM themselves. This novel temperature-responsive microgel is characterized
by means of scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, dynamic
light scattering, N2 gas physisorption, and FT-IR.
