Convection and contactheat treatments which can replace existing chemical oxidation methods weredeveloped for hierarchically oxidized Cu meshes with various surface morphologies, which is a very simple and green route without using toxic chemicals.Three types of Cu meshes[bumpy-like (BL), sinuousness-like (SL), and needle-like (NL) structures]showed similar separation efficienciesof 95-99% over 20 separation cycles based on similar WCAs (147-150°) but these Cu meshes exhibited different behaviours in flux.Too rough and smooth surfaces of Cu meshes resulted in the resistance and the decrease of penetration of oil. Not too rough and smooth surfaces like a BL-Cu mesh were good for a high flux in a broad range of oil viscosity. Furthermore, the less rough surface was more suitable for separation of high viscous oil.The computational fluid dynamics(CFD) simulations were carried out to support our experimental results.TheBL-Cu meshes also showed outstanding mechanical stability because of low resistance to the flow of fluids.
