The purpose of this study is to look into technological changes and current situations of the broadcasting production system of SD, HD, and UHD, thereby analyzing different characteristics of anchorwomen''s make-up in chronological news programs according to the changes in broadcasting producting system by classifying them in terms of elements of make-up design. In order to analyze characteristics and differences of make-up, the selection of subjects was made by ten requested make-up specialists working in the field of broadcasting make-up for more than ten years for a total of twelve anchorwomen ― reckoning up each six who have respectively hosted prime news programs of MBC and KBS for more than three years from the late 1980s to now. Characteristics of twelve anchorwomen''s make-up were analyzed, make-up design was selected for demonstrating image make-up according to the changes in the technology of broadcasting production, and then changes after make-up shooting in accordance with different broadcasting cameras were analyzed through respective shootings of SD, HD, and UHD cameras.
Differences of broadcasting image systems such as SD, HD, and UHD were analyzed, and characteristics and differences of make-up shooting in accordance with each broadcasting image system were examined. Their results are as follows:

1. In the case of SDTV, a color format is compressed into 1/4 based on the 4:1:1 type and in the case of HDTV, a color format is compressed into 1/2 based on the 4:2:2 type. In the case of UHDTV, it is possible to express a color format into a more delicate and natural image on the large screen than the 4:2:2 type. SDTV, HDTV, and UHDTV differ from one another in terms of picture ratio, and they express colors closer to nature with 24 bits, 30 bits, and 36 bits ― ultra high definition (4K: 3840 × 2160) higher than HD (1920 × 1080). That is, SDTV makes an impression different from that of an original color due to color distortion, while HDTV makes an impression nearly the same as the reality because red colors in the same category are reproduced on the screen as they are. UHDTV reproduces colors 99.9% closely to the real objects and unlike HDTV, makes a realistic and three-dimensional expression by presenting an extended view. Therefore, HDTV and UHDTV enhance the sense of realism through the deepened and enriched expression of colors.

2. Results of characteristics of anchorwomen''s make-up in the analog era and in the digital era are as follows:
1) From the analog era to the late 1980s, anchorwomen''s make-up was featured by angular or arch-typed eyebrows, diagonal cheeks, and outcurve lips. The colors of eye shadow were light brown, dark purple, and ivory; the colors of lips were brown and red; the texture of skin was expressed matte.
In the early 1990s, anchorwomen''s make-up was also featured by angular or arch-typed eyebrows, diagonal cheeks, and outcurve lips. The colors of eye shadow were light brown, dark purple, and ivory, light purple; the colors of lips were red and that of wine; the texture of skin was expressed matte.
In the late 1990s, anchorwomen''s make-up was also featured by arch-typed eyebrows, diagonal cheeks, and outcurve lips. The colors of eye shadow were light brown, dark purple, and ivory; the color of lips was that of wine; the texture of skin was also expressed matte.
Accordingly, in the analog era, base make-up was expressed thick and matte; the shape of eyebrows or cheeks was distinctly diagonal; the colors of eye shadow or lips were those of strongly contrasted tones, thus looking more natural with SD-image camera.
2) From the digital era to the early 2000s, anchorwomen''s make-up was featured by angular eyebrows, diagonal or straight cheeks, and outcurve or straight lips. The color of eye shadow was brown; the colors of lips were brown and red; the texture of skin was expressed wet.
In the late 2000s, anchorwomen''s make-up was featured by standard eyebrows, circular cheeks, and straight lips. The colors of eye shadow were peachy, brown, light pink, and dark pink; the colors of lips were beige or pink; the texture of skin was expressed moist or wet. In the 2010s, anchorwomen''s make-up is currently featured by standard eyebrows, circular cheeks, and straight lips. The colors of eye shadow were mostly peachy and brown; the colors of lips were peachy according to those of eye shadow; the texture of skin was expressed wet. Consequently, in the digital era, base make-up was expressed glossy and moist; the shapes of eyebrows or cheeks were naturally circular or straight; the colors of eye shadow or lips were those of natural tones, thus looking not artificial but natural on the high-definition HD and UHD images.

3. In the case of SD camera shooting by demonstrating the make-up of the SDTV era, the tone of skin looked brilliant and smooth, and emphasized features looked well-defined, so the gradation of the make-up looked quite natural though it was made thick and heavy. In the case of HD camera shooting, the make-up was felt awkward due to the distinct difference between the thick and heavy tone of face and the tone of neck, and the colors of excessive eye shadow looked considerably uncomfortable. In the case of UHD camera shooting, owing to its high-definition, which was greatly improved compared with other camera shootings, the thick skin tone, eyebrows and lines of an eye liner looked clear, so causing rather dark and unnatural an effect and emphasizing the thick and matte skin make-up. That is, the make-up of the SDTV era was the most suitable for the broadcasting producting system in those days.
In the case of SD camera shooting, the demonstrated make-up of the HDTV era looked flat, the sides of the nose or cheekbones looked dark, and lips looked light beige. In contrast, in the case of HD camera shooting, natural gradation was made, the texture of skin looked glossy and moist, so the overall base make-up looked natural. However, in the case of UHD camera shooting, the bags under eyes, cheekbones, lips, and partial make-up looked dark and cheerless. Accordingly, the make-up of the HDTV era seemed to have no three-dimensional effect in SD broadcasting system, while it looked rather dull and cheerless and exposed its shortcomings due to vivid definition in UHD broadcasting system.
As for the demonstrated make-up of the UHD era, the skin was expressed moist and wet, and natural colors were used. Therefore, in the case of SD camera shooting, the face looked flat enough to be mistaken as that without make-up; the colors of eyeshadow were unvisible and lips looked light beige, thus looking flat as if make-up were hardly made. HD camera shooting made the make-up look a little more glossy than SD camera shooting, but even in this case news anchorwomen''s impression was felt too dim and flat without looking vivid. In the case of UHD camera shooting, gradation of eyeshadow or the peachy tone of lips looked natural and three-dimensional.
Accordingly, in UHD image system, the elaborate and delicate make-up techniques are called for more than ever in order to express moist and natural skin texture of moderate thickness.
As a good preparation for upcoming changes toward UHDTV broadcasting production system, the inspection of image make-up is currently under way in the field of broadcasting and is a significant study that should be preceded at any cost.
