This study aims to examine the correlation between fruit intake and impaired fasting glucose in normal non-diabetic adults, depending on obesity.
Thus, this study used raw data from the 6th Korea National Health & Nutrition Examination Survey in the second year (2014), and out of all 7,550 survey participants, this study selected 1,341 as final research subjects, except 1,653 under 19, 2,085 over 60 and 2,222 who had missing values or non-response in their main variables. The collected data was analyzed through SPSS 22.0 version. To find out the research subjects’ general characteristics depending on impaired fasting glucose and obesity, this study conducted a cross-analysis, and examined the correlation between their impaired fasting glucose, general characteristics and health behaviors through Chi-square test. Besides, to find out the effect of general characteristics, health behaviors and fruit intake of an obesity group and normal-weight group on the reduction of impaired fasting glucose, this study carried out a regression analysis.
In impaired fasting glucose depending on obesity based on their socio-demographic characteristics, most of the research subjects showed significant differences as they were older in both the obesity group and the normal weight group (p<.001). In the normal weight group, male research subjects showed more significant differences than female ones, even in jobs (p<.05). In impaired fasting glucose depending on obesity and health behaviors, the obesity group showed significant differences as they drank alcohol more (p<.05) and as they took in fruit frequently or less (p<.05), while the normal weight group showed significant differences as they drank alcohol more and were smokers at present (p<.05).
Based on the results above, this study found out that taking in fruit less frequently in the obesity group and smoking in the normal weight group are main factors that increase impaired fasting glucose. Therefore, it seems helpful to take in balanced nutrients and control blood sugar through proper standards and methods of fruit intake, and this study found it necessary to set up individual and community strategies with different health behavior approaches, depending on the degree of obesity, in order to prevent impaired glucose and diabetes.
