프란시스 버니(Frances Burney)의 두 번째 소설인 『세실리아: 어느 상속 녀의 회고록(Cecilia, or Memoirs of an Heiress) 』 (1782)은 가정소설 (domestic novel) 및 “여성 주체(female individual)”의 역사적 맥락을 살펴 봤을 때, 해당 논의의 토대를 이루는 대단히 중요한 작품이다. 버니는 근대 시민 사회(modern civil society)에서 개인(individual) 및 주체성 (independence)의 개념이 남성 중심적으로 구성되었음을 고발하고, 이로 인 해 결과적으로 어떻게 여성들이 사유 재산의 소유와 근대 개인으로서의 권리 를 박탈당해 왔는지를 비판적으로 탐색한다. 『세실리아』를 통해 버니는 18 세기 영국의 사회상을 다방면으로 분석하고 여성의 주체성을 제한하고 억압하 는 사회적 풍조를 강조함으로써 결국 여성에게 있어서는 결혼만이 가정의 영 역(domestic sphere) 내에서 상징적인 독립성을 영위할 수 있는 유일한 방법 이었음을 보여준다. 본 논문의 1장에서는 로마법에서 비롯된 도미니움(dominium)의 개념을 탐 구하여 정치적 독립성을 담보하는 근대 “개인”의 개념이 사유 재산의 소유권 에 기반하고 있음을 살펴본다. 2장에서는 재산을 소유한 미혼 여성이『세실 리아』에서 제시되는 “세계(the world)” 속에서는 설 자리가 없다는 것에 주 목한다. 막대한 유산을 상속받았음에도 불구하고, 세실리아는 결국 사회의 구 81 조적 환경에 의해 모든 재산을 몰수당한다. 그녀는 반복되는 상실의 경험을 통해 근대 사회에서는 미혼의 여성이 결코 도미니움의 특권을 누릴 수 없음을 깨닫게 된다. 당대 신용경제에 대한 무지와 절제되지 않은 감수성 역시 자신 이 소유한 부와 주체성의 상실을 부추길 뿐이다. 3장에서는 버니에 의해 재구 성되는 근대 여성 주체가 가정의 영역 안에서 나타나는 상호 간의 소유 관계 를 통해 구현됨을 살펴본다. 여성이 결혼을 함으로써 남편의 도미니움 에 소 속되는 것이 가부장적 지배체제에 대한 완전한 역전이라 할 수는 없으나, 버 니는 이를 통해 가정의 영역을 여성의 윤리적 모범을 바탕으로 하는 “여성적 (feminine)” 공간으로 재창조한다. 그러므로 가정의 영역은 근대의 양성 분할 적 영역 개념 내에서 도미누스(dominus)가 아닌 도미나(domina)의 형상을 통해 여성적 지위를 획득하게 된다. 버니는 여성의 재산, 소유권, 그리고 독립 성에 대한 대안적인 내러티브를 창조함으로써 여성을 배제시키는 가부장적 가 치와 근대 시민 사회의 남성 중심성을 전복시키는 여성중심적 도미니움을 새 로이 그려내는데, 이는 여성 간의 유산 상속과 여성적 연대에 바탕한다. 이처럼『세실리아』는 가정 영역을 여성적 공간으로 재확립시킨다. 그러나 버니는 세실리아의 결혼을 일종의 “포기(resignation)”로 명명한다. 그러므로 『세실리아』는 “가정의 천사(Angel in the House)” 모델이 지니고 있는 양가 성을 그 어떠한 미화나 타협 없이 그려낸다. 『세실리아』속 여성 도미니움 (female dominium)은 여성에게 가정의 상징적 장(長)으로서의 지위를 부여 하고 일정부분의 독립성을 가능케 함으로써, 이후의 소설들로 하여금 기존의 상업적 “세계”와는 구별되는 사적 영역(private sphere)의 여성적 가치를 성 공적으로 수립할 수 있는 토대를 마련한다. 따라서 근대의 여성적 가정의 영 역은 여성의 지위를 강화시켜주는 개념인 동시에 후대 소설 속에서 끊임없이 재정의 되어야 하는 공간이라 할 수 있다.

Frances Burney’s second novel Cecilia, or Memoirs of an Heiress (1782) is a foundational work in the history of the domestic novel and the history of the “female individual.” In this thesis, I argue that Burney undertakes an extended critique of the male-centered construction of male independence in modern civil society, and how women were consequently sidelined from both owning property and exercising the rights of the modern individual. In Cecilia, Burney represents the vast panorama of eighteenth-century England and highlights a social landscape that restricts and limits female autonomy to show how marriage could present the only way for women to establish a symbolic independence within the domestic sphere.
In Chapter one I explore the concept of dominium from Roman law to examine how the modern conception of “individual” is rooted in ownership of private property as the necessary condition for political independence granted to property-owning men. Chapter two analyses “the world” of Cecilia that has no place for a young unmarried woman of property. Although Cecilia has inherited great wealth, she is ultimately stripped of all her property in the course of the novel. The heroine learns through repeated loss that an unmarried woman cannot achieve dominium in modern society. Her lack of knowledge of the contemporary credit economy and her unmanaged sentiments serve only to hasten her loss of wealth and independence. Chapter three investigates how Burney refigures the female modern individual within the boundaries of mutual ownership within the domestic sphere. Whereas a woman’s incorporation into the dominium is in no way an absolute overturning of patriarchal dominance, Burney recreates the domestic sphere as a feminine one headed by the ethical leadership of women. Through the figure of the domina rather than the dominus, the domestic becomes the feminised locale of modern gender division. By recharting an alternative female narrative of property, ownership, and independence, Burney presents a female-centered dominium where matrilineal inheritance and sororal ties upend patriarchal values and fraternal bonds that exclude women.
Cecilia establishes the domestic sphere as a properly feminine sphere. The promise and the pitfalls of the model of the Angel in the House are uncompromisingly represented in the heroine’s “resignation” into marriage. Female dominium allows women to achieve a certain measured independence as the symbolic head of household, and henceforth the history of the novel would turn to the successful establishment of the proper foundation of the private on female values different from those of the merely commercial “World.” The modern feminine domestic sphere is one that empowers women, but also one that must be continuously renegotiated in the future of the novel.
