Lyocell is one of the highest quality regenerated cellulosic fabric, and the solvent for cellulose is the n-methylmorpholine n-oxide(NMMO), which is environmental- friendly one. Although the wood pulp was usually used as the raw material for Lyocell, in this study, the cotton linter was used as the raw material because of its higher resistibility against fabric fibrillation than wood pulp’s. However, due to the high degree of polymerization(DP) of the cotton linter, the pre-treatment for lowering DP to be dissolved in NMMO easily is needed .
In this study, the autohydrolysis has been used as pre-treatment to control the molecular weight and crystallinity of cotton linter to be dissolved well in NMMO solvent for manufacturing regenerated fibers.
The autohydrolysis pre-treatment without any chemical agents was found to be effective for lowering the molecular weight in addition to the environmental-friendly system than other type of pre-treatments.
The autohydrolysis was also found to be effective for the removal of metal ions that hamper the dissolution of cotton linter by NMMO when used along with ionic polymers and chelating agent.
The results of this study were summarized as followed:
1. Autohydrolysis pre-treatment made possible to control the molecular weight of cotton linter without consuming large amount of chemicals.
2. The autohydrolysis was found to be effective for the removal of metal ions when accompanied with chelating agents or ionic polymer
3. It was found that the autohydrolysis didn’t decrease the alpha-cellulose contents and brightness of the cotton linter.
