본 연구는 20세기 말의 패션 아이콘이자 팝의 황제인 마이클 잭슨의 무대의상이 현대패션에 미친 영향을 분석하고, 더 나아가 복식사적 의의를 파악하는데 목적이 있다.
연구방법은 문헌연구와 사례분석을 병행하였다. 문헌연구는 국내·외의 논문, 서적, 신문(인터넷 신문 포함), 미디어자료, 패션관련 인터넷 사이트와 국내·외의 관련 기사 등을 바탕으로 하여 마이클 잭슨이 솔로로 데뷔한 1979년부터 마지막 정규앨범을 발표한 2001년까지의 무대의상과 이에 동반된 액세서리를 분석하였다. 사례분석의 경우 파리(Paris), 밀라노(Milano), 뉴욕(New York), 런던(London) 세계 4대 프레타포르테(pret-a-porte) 여성복 컬렉션을 중심으로 2001 S/S 시즌부터 2016 S/S 시즌까지 마이클 잭슨 스타일에 영향을 받은 의복과 액세서리를 분석하였다. 객관성 확보를 위해 패션 관련 전공자 3인이 마이클 잭슨의 무대의상과 액세서리의 특징적 요소 중 2개 이상을 사용한 사례를 선정 및 분류하였고, 이러한 사진들과 컬렉션 패션쇼의 동영상을 자세히 볼 수 있는 패션 정보 인터넷 사이트 (www.vogue.co.uk, www.style.co.kr, www.firstview.com)에서 제공한 자료를 참고로 하였다.
마이클 잭슨은 솔로로 데뷔한 1979년부터 마지막 정규앨범을 발표한 2001년까지 ''오프 더 월(off the wall)'', ''스릴러(thriller)'', ''배드(bad)'', ''데인져러스(dangerous)'', ''히스토리(history)'', ''인빈시블(invincible)'' 총 6개의 정규앨범을 발표하였다. 각 앨범별 활동 시기에 착용한 의상과 액세서리를 중심으로 그의 무대의상을 분석하고, 여기에서 네 가지 특징적인 스타일을 도출하였다. 이 스타일은 슈트(suit) 스타일, 밀리터리(military) 스타일, 글리터(glitter) 스타일, 기타 스타일로 분류되었다. 먼저 슈트 스타일은 잭슨이 주로 ''오프 더 월'' 앨범 활동 시에 착용한 스타일로, ''디스코'' 컨셉이 바탕이 된 음악과 함께 그의 대표적인 스타일인 블랙 턱시도에 화이트 셔츠, 나비넥타이가 매치되었다. 밀리터리 스타일은 잭슨이 주로 ''배드''와 ''데인져러스'' 앨범 활동 시에 착용한 스타일로, 그의 특징적인 음색과 역동적인 음악 컨셉을 바탕으로 가죽 스트랩, 지퍼, 스터드 장식이 특징인 가죽 재킷과 제복과 같은 밀리터리 재킷 등으로 나타났다. 글리터 스타일은 잭슨의 ''오프 더 월'', ''데인져러스'', ''히스토리'' 앨범 활동 시에 착용한 스타일로, 힙합, 펑크, 팝 장르가 혼합된 음악 컨셉에 맞추어 스팽글과 비즈, 큐빅, 보석 등이 장식된 화려한 스타일이 나타났다. 기타 스타일은 앞의 세 가지 스타일 외에 입고 벗기 쉽게 디자인된 펜싱 셔츠, 레터맨 재킷, 지퍼와 끈 장식 등 다양한 여밈이 특징인 매직 슈트, 잭슨의 창의적인 아이템이 모두 나타난 스타일로 분류되었다.
이러한 마이클 잭슨의 특징적인 스타일이 2001년부터 2016년까지 프레타포르테 여성복 컬렉션에 어떻게 응용되어 21세기 패션에 영향을 미치고 있는지 분석한 결과는 다음과 같다.
첫째, 잭슨의 슈트 스타일은 광택 있는 소재를 사용하거나 핀턱 장식, 비즈 장식 등의 디테일이 의상에 부가되어 변형된 형태로 나타났으며, 블랙 턱시도 룩에 포인트를 준 나비넥타이와 더불어 발목길이의 팬츠, 화이트 컬러 양말, 블랙 컬러 로퍼, 완장 등의 액세서리가 현대 패션디자이너들의 의상에 다수 응용됨으로써 패션디자인의 영감을 제공한 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 이러한 잭슨의 슈트 스타일을 응용한 패션디자이너로는 랄프 로렌(Ralph Lauren), 필립 트레이시(Philip Treacy), 이브 생 로랑(Yves Saint Laurent), 디케이앤와이(DKNY) 등이 있었다.
둘째, 밀리터리 스타일은 잭슨의 대표적인 스타일로, 금색 자수 디테일과 비즈, 엠블럼(emblem) 장식, 금?은단추, 장식용 수술, 브란덴부르크(brandenbourg) 여밈 등이 현대 패션디자이너들에게 응용되었으며, 수대와 더 스토리 벨트, 팔 버팀대와 정강이 보호대, 보잉 선글라스가 응용된 액세서리 또한 여러 컬렉션에서 응용된 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 대표적인 디자이너로는 발망(Balmain), 프라발 구룽(Prabal Gurung), 에밀리오 푸치(Emilio Pucci), 필립 플레인(Philipp Plein) 등이 있었다.
셋째, 글리터 스타일은 점프 슈트 형태와 화려한 효과의 스팽글, 큐빅, 비즈 장식의 응용이 현대 패션디자이너의 의상과 액세서리에 다수 응용되었다. 또한 홀로그램 소재를 사용하여 움직임에 따라 여러 빛깔을 띠는 의상, 메탈릭 실버, 골드 소재를 사용하여 잭슨의 화려한 무대의상 분위기를 응용한 경우도 상당수 있었다. 또한 큐빅 장식의 장갑이나 크롬 소재 장갑, 린 부츠, 페도라, 반짝이 양말 등의 액세서리가 의상에 매치되어 현대패션에서 잭슨 스타일의 재현이라고 할 정도로 유사하게 응용된 사례가 있었다. 대표적인 디자이너로는 알렉산더 맥퀸(Alexander Mcqueen), 아이작 미즈라히(Isaac Mizrahi), 블루마린(Blumarine), 메종 마르지엘라(Maison Margiela) 등이 있었다.
넷째, 펜싱 셔츠, 레터맨 재킷, 매직 슈트로 대표되는 기타 스타일은 현대패션에서 여미는 형태가 다르게 나타나거나, 잭슨의 미니어처 스푼, 포크 장식이 유사하게 응용된 재킷 등으로 나타났다. 단지 잭슨이 매우 강한 남성적인 스타일을 표방한 반면, 현대 패션디자이너의 응용에서는 다소 여성스러운 스타일로 나타난 차이점이 있었다. 또한 의상과 함께 잭슨의 대표적인 액세서리인 완장, 문장, 페도라를 응용한 사례들을 확인할 수 있었다. 이러한 기타 스타일을 응용한 대표적인 디자이너로는 필립 트레이시, 장 폴 고티에(Jean Paul Gaultier), 후드 바이 에어(Hood by Air), 모스키노(Moschino) 등이 있었다.
복식사적 측면에서 마이클 잭슨의 스타일은 1970년대, 1980년대, 1990년대 패션에 영향을 미쳤고, 특히 1990년대 패션 아이콘으로 대중의 패션을 리드하였으며, 21세기 패션디자이너들에게까지 패션디자인 영감을 제공한다는 측면에서 복식사적 의의가 높다고 할 수 있다.
이러한 연구 결과는 한 시대를 풍미한 패션 아이콘의 패션 스타일을 분석하는 것을 넘어서서 미래 패션의 예측 및 발전에 도움이 될 수 있는 기초 자료가 될 것으로 사료된다. 또한 여성복뿐만 아니라 남성복, 국내 컬렉션에 나타난 마이클 잭슨의 무대의상 사례, 마이클 잭슨 외의 패션 아이콘이 될 만한 인물의 의상이 현대패션에 미친 영향에 대한 연구 등으로 확대되기를 기대해 본다.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the influence of the stage costume of Michael Jackson, a 20th century fashion icon, on contemporary fashion and also its significance in the history of western costumes.
As a research method, literature review and case analysis was used. In literature review, stage costumes and accompanied accessories used by Michael Jackson from 1979, when he debut as a solo singer, to 2001, when he released his last official album, were analyzed, based on relevant studies published in Korea and elsewhere, books, newspaper, journals, fashion-related web sites, and articles. In case analysis, an analysis was performed on clothes and accessories in the women''s pret-a-porter collections from Paris, Milan, New York and London between the 2001 S/S season to 2016 S/S season that were influenced by Michael Jackson''s fashion. To ensure objectivity, three people, who majored in fashion-related studies, selected and classified cases in which two or more elements that were characteristic to Michael Jackson, and data were collected from fashion-related web sites (www.vogue.co.uk, www.style.co.kr, www.firstview.com) where these elements can be viewed in detail.
From his debut in 1979 until release of his last album in 2001, Michael Jackson released six official albums: off the wall, thriller, bad, dangerous, history and invincible. In this study, his stage costumes were analyzed based on the clothes and accessories for different albums, and four characteristic styles were identified. These styles were classified into suit, military, glitter, and other styles. First, the suit style was used mostly for the album ''off the wall'' and, along with the ''disco''-based music, the black tuxedo, white shirt, and bow tie, became his trademark. The military style was mainly used for ''bad'' and ''dangerous''. Based on his characteristic voice and dynamic music, he wore a leather jacket with leather straps, zipper, and studs, and military jacket. The glitter style was worn by Jackson for the albums ''off the wall'', ''dangerous'', and ''history'', and the glamorous looks created by spangles, beads, and crystals complement the music that mixed hiphop with punk and pop. Other styles include a fencing shirt, which was designed to be easy to put on and take off, letterman jacket, and magic suit with different closings such as a zipper and strings, which show creativity in Jackson''s fashion style.
These characteristic elements were found in women''s pret-a-porter collections between the 2001 S/S to 2016 S/S season, and the analysis result is as follows:
First, the suit style of Jackson was transformed by using glossy materials or adding details like pintuck and beads to the clothes. Black tuxedo, bow tie, ankle-length pants, white socks, black loafers, and armband were used by different contemporary fashion designers, such as Ralph Lauren, Philip Treacy, Yves Saint Laurent, and DKNY.
Second, the military style, which is one of the most characteristic styles of Jackson, inspired many fashion designers who used gold embroidery, beads, emblem, gold and silver buttons, decorative tassels, and brandenbourg closing, as well as baldric, The story belt, arm and calf support, and boeing sunglasses as inspiration. The most notable designers who were inspired by this style include Balmain, Prabal Gurung, Emilio Pucci, and Philipp Plein.
Third, the jump suit and glamorous spangles, crystals and beads decorations of the glitter style were used for various clothes and accessories designed by contemporary fashion designers. Many of them also used hologram materials and silver and gold metal to recreate the glamorous styles of Jackson. In addition, accessories such as crystal-decorated gloves, chrome gloves, lean boots, fedora, and glittering socks were matched with contemporary clothes in a way that is very similar to Jackson''s style. Designer''s such as Alexander Mcqueen, Isaac Mizrahi, Blumarine and Maison Margiela adopted this style.
Fourth, the other style, which is characterized by a fencing shirt, letterman jacket, and magic suit, was found in jackets that had different closings or Jackson''s minature spoon and fork decorations. However, Jackson showed a very masculine style, contemporary fashion designers transformed it into a more feminine style. In addition to the clothes, Jackson''s characteristic armband, coat of arms, and fedora were used in different forms. Designers who were inspired by this style included Philip Treacy, Jean Paul Gaultier, Hood by Air and Moschino.
In the history of costume, Michael Jackson influenced fashion in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, and, especially in the 1990s, he led the popular fashion as an icon, and inspired even the fashion designers in the 21st century.
This study provides basic information for predicting and developing fashion in the future, in addition to analysis of fashion style by a fashion icon who dominated an era. I hope this study will be expanded to future research on influence of other fashion icons on contemporary fashion.
