Objectives: The aim of this study is to evaluate the caries preventive effect on permanent teeth by the 12-year community water fluoridation program in Habcheon township area.
Methods: Evaluation surveys were conducted on 8-, 12- and 15-year olds in the fluoridated Habcheon township area in 2012. The same-aged samples at non-fluoridated township areas of the national survey in 2012 were chosen as control group and their data on caries prevalence were used to estimate the caries preventive effect of the study area.
The number of the subjects was 457 in Habcheon township area and 1,792 in the control group. The obtained data from the survey were analyzed using the IBM SPSS statistical package version 21.0. The effectiveness of caries reduction by community water fluoridation was estimated by the differences in DMFT and DMFS indices between the program and control groups. Cofounders of mean number of fissure sealed teeth and tooth surfaces were controlled to estimate the effectiveness of caries reduction.
Results: The odds ratio of no experience in dental caries among subjects of fluoridated area was 1.33 compared to control group. The mean DMFT score or DMFS score adjusted for the number of fissure-sealed teeth or tooth surfaces were lower than those in control group. The reduction rate estimated based on the difference of adjusted mean DMFT score between program and control group was 23.4%.
Conclusions: These results suggest that the effectiveness of caries reduction on permanent teeth by the community water fluoridation program in the fluoridated township area was so high that the community water fluoridation program should be expended to other areas in Korea.
