여성들의 미에 대한 노력과 관심은 미용산업 발달에 큰 영향을 미치고 있는데, 네일 미용산업은 소수의 전유물에서 일반 대중들에게로 빠르게 확산되어 가고 있는 추세이다. 이와 더불어 질적인 향상이 빠르게 이루어지고 있으며, 이런 질적 향상으로 가장 큰 변화를 가져온 것은 UV젤(UV gel)이라고 할 수 있다.
UV젤은 유연성, 투명성, 지속성, 발색력, 시술의 간편함 등이 뛰어나고 다양한 표현이 가능할 뿐만 아니라 인체에 무해하고 안전해서 빠른 속도로 수요와 공급이 늘고 있다. 그러나 굳어버린 젤을 제거하는 물리·화학적인 방법은 손톱 손상을 초래할 수 있고 실제로도 많은 손상 사례를 접할 수 있다. 이에 본 연구는 최근 네일 미용산업에서 활발히 활용되고 있는 UV젤 네일의 시술 및 관리, 제거 시 발생하는 문제점들을 연구 분석하고 손톱건강에 미치는 영향을 연구하기로 하였다.

본 연구는 전국에 거주하는 20∼40대 이상 네일샵을 방문하는 여성 고객 367명을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하였으며, 수집된 자료는 SPSS(Statistical Package for the Social Science) WIN 21.0 프로그램을 이용하여 분석하였다. 분석기법으로는 연구대상자의 일반적 특성을 파악하기 위해 빈도와 백분율을 산출하였으며, 연구 대상자의 인구통계학적 특성, 일반적인 네일 관리 행동 및 서비스 선호도 분석, UV젤 네일 관리 행동 및 서비스 선호도 분석, UV젤 네일 시술과 손톱 손상과의 연관성 분석 및 손상 후 관리 행동에 대해 구체적으로 알아보기 위해 t-test(검증)와 One-way ANOVA(일원변량분석), χ2(Chi-square) 검증, 그리고 빈도분석을 실시하였다.

본 연구의 결과는 다음과 같이 요약할 수 있다.

첫째, 네일샵을 처음 이용하게 된 동기는 스스로 필요성을 느껴서 이용하게 된 여성이 가장 많았으며, 연령이 많은 여성일수록 네일샵을 스스로 필요성을 느껴서 처음으로 이용하게 되었다. 네일샵 이용 시 UV젤 네일을 받는 여성이 가장 많은 것으로 나타났다.

둘째, 네일 관리에 대한 관심도는 5점 만점 중에서 전체 4.29로 매우 높은 것으로 나타났고, 네일 관리를 사회생활 때부터 시작한 여성이 가장 많았으며, 네일 서비스를 받는 이유는 외적 아름다움을 위해 받는 여성이 가장 많았으며, 기분전환, 손·발 건강과 보호, 매너를 위해 받는 순으로 나타났다.

셋째, UV젤 네일을 선호하는 여성이 대부분을 차지하였으며, 지속성 때문에 UV젤 네일을 선호하는 여성이 가장 많았다. 손톱의 손상으로 인해서 UV젤 네일을 선호하지 않는 여성이 가장 많았으며, UV젤 네일샵 선택 시 네일 전문가의 전문성을 중요하게 고려하는 여성이 가장 많은 것으로 나타났다.

넷째, UV젤 네일 시술 전반에서 UV젤 제거가 손톱 손상의 주된 원인으로 인식하는 여성이 많았으며, UV젤 제거 방법 중에 셀프 제거가 주된 영향을 준다고 인식하는 여성이 가장 많았다. UV젤 네일 시술 후 경험한 손톱의 변화로는 손톱이 얇아짐을 경험한 여성이 가장 많았으며, 아무 변화가 없었다는 여성은 매우 적은 것으로 나타났다.

다섯째, UV젤 네일 시술 후 손상된 손톱을 보강제를 통해 관리하는 여성이 가장 많았으며, 그대로 방치하는 여성도 높은 비율을 차지하였다. 여성들은 UV젤 네일의 지속적인 시술 의향이 높은 것으로 나타났는데, UV젤 네일 시술 후 네일 손상을 경험하고도 계속적인 시술 의향이 있는 이유는 UV젤의 지속성 때문이라고 응답한 여성이 가장 많은 것으로 나타났다.

연구 결과에 따르면 많은 여성들이 네일샵에서 UV젤 네일을 가장 선호하고 있었으며, 고객들은 손톱의 건강에 UV젤 네일의 오프가 가장 많은 영향을 미치고 있다고 인식하고 있었다. 특히 손톱 손상을 경험하고 UV젤 네일에 대한 거부감과 부정적인 인식이 증가함에 따라 이러한 인식을 긍정적으로 전환하기 위한 체계적이고 전문적인 손톱 건강 회복 프로그램을 구축하고, 숙련된 네일 전문가들의 배출을 위한 체계적인 교육과, 고객들의 UV젤 네일에 대한 인식 변화에 도움을 줄 수 있는 다양한 프로그램의 개발이 시급한 실정이다. 아울러 제품 회사에서도 지속적인 연구개발로 손톱에 손상을 주지 않는 다양한 제품 개발이 이루어져야 할 것이다.

Women’s efforts and interest in the area of beauty have a great impact on the development of the beauty industry, and the nail beauty industry, which has been the preserve of a minority, is rapidly spreading to the general public. Along with this change, the quality of the industry is rapidly improving, and the biggest development that is responsible for this improvement is UV gel.
Demand for UV gel is rapidly increasing, as it is flexible and transparent, lasts long, enables perfect color and is easy to apply, and can also be used for various expressions and is harmless and safe to use. However, physical·chemical methods of removing hardened gel can cause damage to nails, and there are many instances of the damages. This study aims to analyze the problems in UV gel nail art and managing or removing gel nails, and investigate its effects on nail health.

Questionnaires were distributed to 367 women in their 20s, 30s and 40s and who visit nail shops across the nation, and collected data were analyzed using SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Science) WIN 21.0. Frequency and percentage were calculated to understand the general characteristics of the study subjects. This study specifically analyzed the demographic characteristics of the subjects, general nail care, service preference, UV gel nail care and service preference, the correlation between UV gel nail art and damages of nail and nail care after damages by using t-test, One-way ANOVA, χ2(Chi-square) test and frequency analysis.

The summary of the study results is as follows.

First, most women decided to visit nail shops for the first time because they found it necessary to get nail care services, and the older the subjects, the more they found it necessary to get nail care services. The number of women who received gel nail arts was the greatest among women who visited nail shops.

Second, the level of interest in nail care was very high, 4.29 on a five-point scale, with the largest number of women responding that they started to care for their nails when they began their careers. The most common reason for getting nail care service was a desire for outer beauty, and this was followed by change of pace, health and protection of hands and feet and etiquette.

Third, most women prefer UV gel nails, and the greatest number of women prefer UV gel nails because of their consistency. The number of women who do not prefer UV gel nails because of damages to the nail was the highest, and the greatest number of women considered the professionalism of nail artists to be important when selecting UV gel nail shop.

Fourth, most women considered UV gel nail arts as the cause of damages to nails, and the most women thought that self-removing has the greatest effects on nails among the methods of removing UV gel nail. In terms of changes to the nails after UV gel nail arts, most women experienced thinning of their nails, while very few women experienced no changes.

Fifth, most women used nail hardener to care for their nails after UV gel nail arts, and a large percentage of women just left their nails as they were. Many women indicated an inclination to use UV gel nail art consistently. Most women cited the consistency of UV gel as the reason why they were inclined to use UV gel nail art regularly, even though they had experienced damage to their nails after UV gel nail arts. According to the study’s findings, many women prefer UV gel nails to other nail shop services, and customers thought that UV gel nail removal has the biggest impact on their nail health.

In particular, while the number of women experiencing damages to their nails and developing an aversion and negative perception regarding UV gel nails is increasing, the establishment of a systematic and professional nail health recovery program, the education of professional nail artists and a variety of programs that can bring about changes in customer awareness of UV gel nail are urgently needed. Furthermore, product manufacturers should develop various products that will not harm nails through continuous research and development.
