본 연구는 21세기 메가 트랜드인 지속가능 패션과 전통 문화적 특성이 반영된 한국적 패션과의 상관성을 고찰하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 먼저 지속가능성의 개념 및 선행 연구자들의 패션분야 지속가능성 관련 연구 유형 및 논의 결과를 근거로 패션의 지속가능 특성을 집약하였다. 또한 한국적 패션의 내재적, 외형적 특징의 이해를 돕기 위해 한국전통 사상, 건축, 공예, 회화, 복식 등의 한국 전통문화에 나타난 지속가능성을 살펴보았다. 또한 지속가능한 패션디자인 유형에 따른 사례를 분석한 디자인적 특성 연구와 함께 전통 문화적 특성이 반영된 한국적 패션의 내재된 지속가능성을 비교 고찰하여, 상관성을 찾아 미래 지속가능한 디자인으로의 한국적 패션의 가능성을 제시하고자 하였다.
본 연구의 내용은 선행 연구들의 이론적 고찰을 바탕으로 2000년 이후 현대 패션 디자인의 사례를 통하여 지속가능한 특성을 구분하였다. 그 결과 자연성, 무한성, 단순성, 전통성으로 도출되었으며 그 특성은 다음과 같다.
첫째, 자연성은 친환경 유기농 소재, 친환경 공법으로 제작한 재활용 섬유 소재를 활용한 자연 친화적인 재료를 사용한 디자인(Eco friendly material design)으로 나타났으며, 이러한 친환경적 소재의 사용은 기존 화학처리 섬유제작에서 발생한 환경오염의 감소와 의복폐기의 용이성이 있어 지속가능성의 환경적 의미를 가지고 있었다. 둘째, 무한성은 시공간을 초월한 조형의 창조적 변형디자인으로 나타났으며, 이는 자원의 재활용을 통한 수명주기의 연장, 조형적 변형을 통한 새로운 디자인적 가치를 탄생시키는 리뉴어블 디자인(Renewable design)과 단일 아이템의 착장 변화를 통해 스타일을 다양화하는 멀티펑션 디자인(Multi function design)으로 나타났다. 셋째, 단순성은 최소한의 재료를 이용하는 미니멀 디자인(Minamal design)으로 나타났다. 이는 생산 과정에서 재단 및 봉제의 방법을 최소화하여 에너지 효율성을 높이며, 불필요한 디테일과 장식적 요소를 최대한 배제하여 자원절약의 효과를 갖는다. 또한 디자인 단계부터 낭비되는 천이 없도록 기획, 설계함으로써 자원낭비를 방지하는 제로 웨이스트 디자인(Zero waste design)은 동양의 단순한 평면구성 방식과 오리가미 기법에서 해결책을 착안하여 지속가능 디자인의 경제성을 찾을 수 있었다. 지속가능 패션의 넷째, 전통성은 개별적 문화의 잠재력을 혁신시키기 위해, 지역성과 차별성을 가미하거나, 패스트 패션의 획일화, 동일화에 대한 해결책인 슬로우 디자인(Slow design)으로 나타났다.
현대패션의 지속가능한 4가지 특성이 내재된 한국적 패션을 살펴보면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 한국적 패션에 적용된 지속가능한 특성인 자연성은 천연 전통소재를 현대에 맞게 융합하고 개발하여 사용하는 것으로 나타났고. 둘째, 단순성은 비움을 통해 불필요한 디테일과 장식적 요소를 배제한 자원의 절약과 최소한의 생산 과정 방법을 통해 효율성을 높이는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 전통 한복의 평면 구성방식을 활용하여 생산 시 원단 절감의 효과를 갖는 지속가능 디자인과의 유사성을 보였다. 셋째, 무한성은 한 가지 아이템으로 다양한 용도에 맞게 변형 가능한 실용적인 가변성으로 나타났으며, 또한 한복의 감싸 입는 착장법을 활용해, 다양한 사이즈를 아우를 수 있게 함으로써, 플러스 사이즈 소비자들의 쇼핑에서 받는 소외감과 스트레스를 줄여주는 것으로 나타났다. 넷째, 전통성은 전통문화 관습을 활용해 지역사회중심 생산 및 디자이너들과의 협업 등 한국적인 독자성을 세계적인 보편성으로 호환시킬 수 있는 가능성을 내포한 디자인의 시도로 나타났다. 이러한 전통성을 바탕으로 한 수공예적 생산은 지역 경제발전의 효과와 일자리 창출로 이어지며, 이는 지속가능 패션에서 추구하는 윤리성, 고품질성, 다양성과 차별성, 희소성을 충족시킬 수 있어 전통성은 지속가능 패션에서 중요한 의미를 갖는 특성으로 나타났다.
본 연구를 통하여 지속가능 패션의 특성과 한국적 패션이 연관성을 갖고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 이는 지속가능성이 추구하는 인간과 자연의 상생적 발전을 추구하는 가치관과 한국 전통 사상의 유사성에서 기인했다고 할 수 있다. 이러한 전통 사상은 조형문화의 뿌리가 되었고, 이는 현대 한국적 패션에도 내재되 있는 것으로 나타났다. 그러므로 지속가능한 패션디자인의 연구 및 실천에 있어 한국 전통문화 디자인이 그 해결 방안을 제시해 줄 수 있을 것으로 사료된다. 앞으로 경쟁력 있는 글로벌한 한국적 패션디자인을 위해서는 한국 전통문화에 다양한 시각으로 접근하여 아이디어를 탐색하고, 현대 라이프스타일과 트랜드와의 융합적인 디자인의 시도가 필요하다고 사료된다.

This study is to find out the correlationship between Korean traditional fashion and sustainable fashion which is mega trend in 21 century. First, we looked into sustainable fashion based on it''s concept, research jobs and the results. We also tried to find out sustainability from our traditional ideology, architecture, handcrafts, paintings, and garment to get better understanding of intrinsic and extrinsic features of Korean fashion. As we compared sustainability of our traditional fashion with a study that we analyzed sustainable fashion design case by case, by finding out correlationship, we''d like to suggest the possibility of Korean fashion as sustainable design. This study, based on previous researchers'' theories and ideas, divided the features of ''sustainability'' after having looked into many exemplars of modern fashion design after 2000.
We could sort the results into these 4 things; naturalness, infinity, simplicity, traditionality. The details of them are like the following;
1) naturalness- A design using eco-friendly materials which are made by reusable textile that is made with organic stuff in environment-friendly way. Using these kinds of eco-friendly materials means that we reduce environmental pollution which is caused when we produce chemical textile and stuff. There is also significant meaning of sustainability since we could get easier access to discard clothes. 2) infinity- creative and modified design which is beyond time or space. It includes these three things; keeping arts/design longer by recycling, renewable design which creates new value of design by modifying arts, multi-function design that varies styles by changing single item. 3) simplicity- mininal design using the minimum materials. By doing this, we could minimize the process of cutting and sewing, increase energy efficiency, and save our resources by getting rid of unnecessary details and decoration. Also, zero waste design, which includes not wasting any cotton or stuff during the whole process, could be very economical sustainable design by combining Eastern''s simple plan design and origami skills. 4) traditionality- to respect their own culture and develop their potential, we add some their own local things. And slow design, a solution to fashion''s uniformity, was invented.
Korean fashion including these 4 characteristics is like this;
1) naturalness- we adjusted out natural/traditional materials to current trends. 2) simplicity- we got rid of unnecessary details, and decoration to save resources, and increase efficiency by doing minimum producing procedure. Also, using method of plan composition of traditional ''Hanbok'', we cut costs of fabric when we produce them. It is very similar to sustainable design. 3)infinity- we could transform an single item to many different/practical ways, and prevent plus size consumers from getting stress, and feeling left out by making various sizes using mode of wearing that wrap them up like Hanbok. 4)traditionality- We could try to invent design which has high potential to spread our traditional items to all over the world. We could make it possible by co-working with many designers, and focusing on our own tradition, local community. The production of hand-made items based on traditionality could lead to growing up our economy and creating jobs. This could include all the important features we have always pursed in sustainable fashion business like ethicality, high-quality, diversity, and scarcity. So, traditionality has very signigicant meaning in sustainable fashion.
In this study, we found out that there is a link between sustainable fashion and Korean traditional fashion. This is because that the idea of human beings and nature should co-exist and our traditional ideologies have something in common. This kind of ideology has been a root of culture&arts, and we are able to find it in our modern fashion trends. As a result, we think that design of our traditional culture could give us the answer to some research or experiments of sustainable fashion design. From now on, to make our fashion design popular to all countries, we should not stop thinking to make innovative ideas, rethink from different angles, and try combining it to modern like lifestyle and fashion trend.
