The severity of snoring, which causes obstructive sleep apnea, has been increasingly highlighted, thus the efforts to find the causes and solutions of the snoring have been made constantly.
Due to a high risk of surgical procedure and a high recurrent rate after surgery, intraoral devices as more conservative methods have been frequently used and various types of anti-snoring devices have been developed and manufactured.
Among various anti-snoring devices, Anterior Mandibular Advancement Device has become popular since the post-treatment improvement with Anterior Mandibular Advancement Device on the air flow in upper respiratory tracts was reported.


However, the effects of Anterior Mandibular Advancement Device on patients may differ depending on what type of Anterior Mandibular Advancement Device doctors choose and how dental technicians constructs the device.
Changes in the vertical dimension, which causes muscle changes and mandibular position, affect the area of the upper respiratory tract. Specifically, the tongue space size and tongue position (affected by the vertical dimension) influence the area of the upper respiratory tract.
Not only the vertical dimension of the device, but also the thickness of the device part that touches the teeth and soft tissue is important, because the increased thickness proportionally narrows the tongue space.
As the thickness of the device is excessive, Anterior Mandibular Advancement Device is less effective. The more anterior position of mandible to compensate the reduced effect may affect the temporomandibular joint adversely.
The specific details of the design such as the setting of posterior margin and device thickness have a significant impact on the treatment effect. Also the design with less discomfort to patients can facilitate device adaptation. Considering these factors on device fabrication, we can expect the more satisfactory clinical outcome.
