This study was performed to study the proper cultivation method of Allium senescens L. which is considered to be a prospect crops for the new source of rural household income. The proper planting density (planting distance: 5×5, 10×10, 15×15 cm with bulblet numbers: 1 and 2) and planting depth (5, 10 and 15 cm with 2 bulblets) were analysed with varied treatments. The growth and yield were also analyzed for the effect of mulching and cutting height after harvest (2, 4, 6 cm, 2 bulblets) with planting density of 10×10 cm and planting depth of 10 cm.
The growth of A. senescens L. with different planting densities showed the best result in leaf numbers and underground part growth with low density planting group, 15×15 cm and 1 bulblet. However, 5×5 cm, 2 bulblets planting group which has the highest planting density showed the higher yield (5,368.9 g·m-2) than yields of other groups (1,743.6-3,443.2 g·m-2).
For experiments with planting depth, 15 cm planting group showed the highest number of leaves, and 10 and 15 cm planting group showed yield per 1 m2 of higher than that of 5 cm planting group by 253.4 and 272.8g, respectively. Additionally, bulb growth of A. senescens L. was better in 10 and 15 cm planting group.
There was a tendency of the broader width of leaves in non-mulching group than mulching group and, in overall, the non-mulching group showed better underground part growth. Additionally, the non-mulching group showed 12.1% more yield than that of mulching group.
A. senescens L. showed excellent numbers and length of leaves when cut 6 cm high during harvest and 4 and 6 cm processed group also showed good growth of bulbs and roots in underground part. Four to six cm processed group showed more yields (3,443.2 and 3,327.3 g, respectively) than that of 2 cm processed group (2,449.0 g) in the analysis of total yield per 1 m2.
Following conclusions were made with the result that cultivation method should be different according to cultivation purpose.
(1) To increase the growth of A. senescens L., it is recommended to plant with planting spacing of 15×15 cm, one bulblet per planting, 10-15 cm planting depth and cultivate without mulching and then harvest with cutting height of 6 cm.
(2) To increase yield per 1 m2, it is recommended to plant on soil without mulching, with planting distance of 5×5 cm, two bulblets per planting, 10-15 cm planting depth and cutting height of 4-6 cm at every harvest season.
(3) To produce the bulbs and roots of A. senescens L., it is recommended to plant on soil without mulching, with planting spacing of 15×15 cm, one bulblet per planting, 10-15 cm planting depth and then harvest with cutting height of 4-6 cm.
