The Problems of Body in Mikhail Bakhtin: Focusing on Event-Outsideness-Grotesque body

This study is tried to revalue meaning of ‘body’ in M. M. Bakhtin. Before Bakhtin discovered ''language'' in Problems of Dostoevsky''s Art (1929), Body already existed in his earlier thoughts and developed in his whole thoughts. As one of the core concepts in Bakhtin thoughts, body should be considered.
As everyone know, it is impossible to separate act of human from body. Since subjectivity of human act is guaranteed by body, Body is closely bound up with human activity and answerability of human behavior. These traits of body are seen in earlier his work, like Art and Answerability (1919), Toward a Philosophy of the Act (1919-1921), Author and Hero in Aesthetic Activity (1920-1924). In earlier thoughts, Bakhtin strongly emphasized ethical conduct of human and answerability of subject in order to unity in art and life. In this regards, ‘Event’ is understood based on meaning of answerability. ‘Event’ means concrete time and space which conduct responsible act of human. Concreteness is as the most important features of ‘Event’, by concreteness ‘Event’ is linked with body. Taking physical time and space, body is not only way of being but doing. Answerability of human act ensures by body.
Likewise, in terms of feature of body, subjectivity and concreteness, body is close to other core concept. ‘Outsidness’ means relationship I and others (or Hero and Author) who have ‘Surplus of seeing’. Aesthetic activity of subject depends on ‘Surplus of seeing’ of others. Only others who exist outside can owe ‘Surplus of seeing’. This means, the most important of ‘Outsidness’ is separation of space subject and others, and its boundary. Subject and others owe each space which never be shared. This trait of ‘Outsidness’ is characteristic of body. Is it possible to share body? Body only belongs to by itself. Body has unshareable space and definite boundary between inside and outside.
Finally, ‘Grotesque body’ in Rabelais and His World (1968) should be understood aspects of Bakhtin’s novel theory in 1930-40s. Although ‘Grotesque body’ means public body regarding the popular culture, ‘Grotesque body’ is not massive human bodies without boundary, but combination of subject who conduct act. In image of ‘Grotesque body’, boundary of body is not disappearing but expands at human being level.
