Self Acceptance and Life Satisfaction of Persons with Physical Disabilities after an Accident : A Qualitative Study

Abstract
The purpose of the research is to understand the life of persons with disabilities caused by an accident by reconstructing their life experiences. This study investigated the associations among self acceptance and life satisfaction.
As a research tool, Fritz Schutze?s narrative interview was used, and four cases were analyzed in four method proposed by Lieblich, Tuval-Mashiach & Zilber(1998).
The individual life story of the study participants is restructured as follows: ‘a friendly ecological poet who is completely paralyzed,’ ‘a meditation teacher who has lost her right arm,’ ‘an independent human rights activist sitting on her wheelchair all the time,’ and ‘a handicapped woman suffering from depression for her stigma’. Our subject suggested self acceptance of persons with physical disabilities after an accident account of the seven steps. The seven steps of the self acceptance is initial shock and personal anger, denial and confusion, loss by realization, suffering and despair, depression and retreat, challenge and spiritual enlightenment, acceptance and growth.
Study participant A, B, C who go through with self acceptance process are considered a turning point in their life but severe disabilities experience a crisis event. After their accident, they find out and look for meaning in life and enjoy plenary satisfaction through new path creation. Self acceptance of persons with physical disabilities after an accident could establish self concept and is connected to life satisfaction.
In conclusion, this research gives us better understanding of the life of the persons with physical disabilities after an accident and provides undertones of how to supply psychotherapy for them.
