본 연구는 밀양백중놀이의 문화원형 속에 내재된 서사구조 및 놀이의 문화인류학적 기능을 분석한 연구이다. 특히 문화원형으로서 백중놀이의 서사적 요소와 문화적 기능을 분석하고 시대별로 어떻게 전개되어 왔는지 분석하고자 한다. 왜냐하면 문화원형의 모습을 유지하고 있는 전통의 민속놀이가 지금시대에 어떤 의미를 갖는지와 어떻게 활용되면 유용할지를 검토할 필요가 있기 때문이다.
민속놀이란 한 민족이 숙성시켜 온 의식주 활동의 문화적 총체라고 할 수 있다.
이는 즉, 일정한 시공간 속에서 사회구성원들의 삶의 생태계를 반영한 형식이자 산물이라고 할 수 있다. 이러한 전통 민속놀이는 풍부하고 섬세한 감정과 정서 그리고 낙천적인 기상을 바탕으로 일정한 규칙과 질서에 따르고 자유로운 삶 가운데 정제되고 제도화되는 형상을 띠면서 전승되었다.
특히 우리나라의 전승되어 내려오는 민속놀이는 휴머니즘적 요소와 지역성, 예술성을 갖추고 발전하는 공연형식이다. 밀양백중놀이의 특징도 이러한 특징을 잘 갖춘 공연형식이다.
지금의 이 시점에 민속놀이의 문화인류학적 다기능과 효용성을 살펴보되 밀양백중놀이를 분석대상으로 하여 미래의 문화를 조망해볼때 어떻게 다양한 문화콘텐츠로 재생산해 갈 것인지를 밝히는 연구가 필요하다. 따라서 본 연구의 목적은 밀양백중놀이 안에 나타난 역사인류학적 측면에서의 문화적 기능과 여러 텍스트적 요소를 분석하여 지속가능한 민속놀이의 전승방식을 찾는데 있다. 본 연구를 통해 다루고자 하는 연구목표는 다음과 같다.
첫째, 밀양백중놀이가 무형문화재 지정되기 전·후의 서사구조 전개양상을 통해 어떠한 차이점이 있는지 고찰해 보는데 있다.
둘째, 민속놀이의 문화적 기능을 바탕으로 밀양백중놀이가 지니고 있는 휴머니즘 측면, 이데올로기 측면, 사회적 측면, 예술적 측면을 분석하여 문화적 기능을 도출하고자 한다.
셋째, 문화원형콘텐츠의 밀양백중놀이가 문화재지정 이후 변화과정을 분석하여 지역축제로서의 밀양백중놀이의 문화콘텐츠로서의 가능성을 도출하고자 한다.
연구결과는 학술적으로는 문화원형콘텐츠의 원형에 대한 이해를 드높이고, 교육적으로는 연구성과가 문화원형 백중놀이의 전승교재로 사용할 수 있으며, 산업적으로는 문화산업 현장에서 문화원형콘텐츠로서의 밀양백중놀이가 대중화 및 문화상품화의 길을 모색하는데 기여할 것이다.
연구방법은 형성배경에 대한 문화사적, 통시적 고찰과 선행연구분석에 의한 특성 고찰, 백중놀이의 텍스트인 서사구조에 대한 스토리텔링 구조분석, 백중놀이의 문화적 기능에 대한 문화인류학적 기능분석을 방법론으로 접근한다.
보다 구체적으로는 밀양백중놀이의 형성배경과 전개양상에 대한 고찰을 통시적 측면에서 문화사적으로 고찰한다. 무형문화재 지정 전· 후시기 전승체계에 대한 현황분석과 백중놀이 서사구조의 텍스트적 특징은 스토리텔링 관점에서 서사구조의 변화양상을 고찰한다. 또한 밀양백중놀이의 춤적 특성 고찰은 춤사위와 유래를 중심으로 과장별 내재된 상징 분석을 수행하였다.
밀양백중놀이의 문화적 기능에 대한 분석은 기능주의 관점에서 고문화인류학적 요소를 고찰하였고, 전승방안의 대안마련은 축제콘텐츠로의 개발방안을 모색하여 제시하였다. 또한 축제콘텐츠로 발전방안은 거버넌스 측면에서 제시하였다. 나아가 전승과정상의 제 문제는 지원제도 및 정책적 환경의 측면에서 고찰하였다.
밀양백중놀이의 형성과정에는 유래, 형성, 전승 그리고 연희과정은 무형문화재로 지정되기 전의 전개 연희과정과 무형문화재로 지정된 후의 전개 연희양식으로 나누었고 이러한 자료들은 서적과 논문, 학회지에 기초한 문헌적 방법을 택하여 조사하였다. 그리고 밀양백중놀이에 나타난 문화적 기능을 고찰하기 위해서는 역사인류학적 측면의 문화적 기능을 고찰한 후 밀양백중놀이 서사구조 전개양상에서 나타난 4가지 문화적 기능(휴머니즘적 , 이데올로기적, 사회문화적, 예술적)으로 나누었다. 또한 밀양백중놀이의 콘텐츠적 가치를 도출하기 위해서는 문화 콘텐츠와 문화원형콘텐츠의 개념과 특성, 문화원형 콘텐츠의 필요성을 살펴본 후, 이것을 토대로 밀양백중놀이에 대한 콘텐츠를 네 가지로 나누어 가치를 도출하였는데 첫째로는 문화원형으로서의 콘텐츠적 가치와 의미를 알아보았고 둘째로는 문화재 지정 이후의 콘텐츠로서의 문제점과 재선 방안을 살펴보았다. 셋째로는 밀양백중놀이의 연희과정에서 문화적 함의를 도출하였고, 마지막으로 지역축제로서의 밀양백중놀이 연계방안으로 고찰하였고 그에 따른 총괄적 연구 결과를 도출하였다

This study examined the cultural and anthropological functions of epic structure and play contained in the cultural archetype of Milyang Baekjungnori. In particular, this study looked into the epic components and cultural functions of Baekjungnori as a cultural archetype, and then analyzed its development by periods. It seems to be meaningful to examine what meaning a traditional folk play that preserves the looks of a cultural archetype has in the present day and what is a useful method of its utilization.
A folk play seems to be the cultural integration of human activities for food, clothing and shelter, which is matured by an ethnic group. In other words, it is a form or a product that reflects the ecology of social member’s life in a certain period of time and in a certain space. A traditional folk play has been handed down by such a form as observing certain rules and orders and being defined and systematized through a unconstrained life, based on abundant and delicate feelings and emotions and optimistic spirit.
In particular, domestic folk plays have the form of performance that equips with humanistic components, locality and artistry. Milyang Baekjungnori also has these characteristics fully.
At this point of time, it is necessary to examine the cultural and anthropological functions and utilities of folk play, with Milyang Baekjungnori as a study subject, focusing on the method of its reproduction into diverse cultural contents, from the perspective of culture in the future.
The purpose of this study was to examine the various cultural functions and textual components of Milyang Baekjungnori from the perspective of culture and anthropology and then find out the method of passing down of a sustainable folk play. In detail, the aim of this study was:
(1) to examine the difference before and after the designation of Milyang Baekjungnori as an intangible cultural asset, focusing on the developmental modality of epic structure.
(2) to analyze the humanistic, ideologic, social and artistic perspectives, contained in Milyang Baekjungnori, on the basis of folk play’s cultural functions, and then find out the cultural function of Milyang Baekjungnori.
(3) to find out the possibility of Milyang Baekjungnori as a cultural archetype content of local festivity by analyzing the process of its changes after its designation as a cultural asset.
Study findings could enhance people’s understanding of a cultural archetype content, from the academic perspective; be used as teaching materials for the transmission of a cultural archetype Baekjungnori, from the educational perspective; and contribute to seeking after the method of popularization and cultural commercialization of Milyang Baekjungnori in the actual scene of cultural industry as a cultural archetype content, from the industrial aspect.
The methods of this study were cultural historical and diachronic examination on the background of formation of Milyang Baekjungnori, examination on its characteristics based on the analysis of preceding studies and researches, the analysis on storytelling structure in relation to the epic structure, namely a text of Baekjungnori, and the cultural and anthropological analysis of functions in relation to the cultural function of Baekjungnori.
In detail, the background of formation and the modality of development of Milyang Baekjungnori were examined, focusing on cultural history, from the diachronic perspective. The actual status of transmission system before and after the designation of Milyang Baekjungnori as an intangible cultural asset was examined, and the textual characteristic of epic structure of Baekjungnori was looked into, focusing on the changing modality of the epic structure, from the perspective of storytelling. In addition, the characteristic of dance of Milyang Baekjungnori was examined focusing on its dancing step and origin, thus carrying out the analysis of symbols contained in it by acts.
The cultural function of Milyang Baekjungnori was examined, focusing on the ancient cultural and anthropological components, from the functionalist perspective. As for the preparation of alternative to the plan of transmission, the developmental plan of it as a festival content was groped after and presented. The developmental plan of it as a festival content was presented from the perspective of governance. In addition, All the problems generated in the process of transmission were examined from the perspective of support system and policy environment.
The process of formation of Milyang Baekjungnori was divided into origin, formation and transmission; whereas the process of performance was classified into pre-designation process of performance and post-designation process of performance, based on literature review with books, dissertations and journals. In order to examine the cultural function of Milyang Baekjungnori, the author looked into it from the anthropological perspective and then divided it into four functions, presented in the developmental modality of Milyang Baekjungnori, such as humanistic function, ideological function, sociocultural function and artistic function. In order to draw the content value of Milyang Baekjungnori, the author looked into the concept and characteristic of cultural contents and cultural archetype contents and the necessity of cultural archetype contents, and then classified the content of Milyang Baekjungnori into four, thus examining: (1) the value and meaning of contents as a cultural archetype; (2) the problem and improvement plan of contents after its designation as a cultural asset; (3) the cultural implication of performing process of Milyang Baekjungnori; and (4) the linking plan of Milyang Baekjungnori as a local festival.
