Purpose: This study investigated the effects of a hope enhancement program on hope, self-efficacy, and quality of life for mentally ill persons in day hospital. Method: The research design was a non-equivalent control group pre-post test design as a quasi-experimental study. The subjects of this study were selected from mentally ill persons at A day hospital and B day hospital in D city. They were 36 subjects, which include 18 subjects for the experimental group and the other 18 subjects for the control group. This study was conducted from March 17th to April 8th in 2014. Data were analyzed by using IBM SPSS/WIN 19.0 Program with χ² test, fisher''s exact test, t-test, and independent sample t-test. Result: Participants in the hope enhancement program reported increased hope and quality of life scores, which was significant different from those in the control group. Participants in the hope enhancement program reported increased self-efficacy was not significant different from those in the control group. Conclusion: The hope enhancement program was effective in hope and quality of life for mentally ill persons in day hospital. Therefore, the hope enhancement program would contribute to the nursing intervention for mentally ill persons in day hospital
