This study was performed to determine the suicide ideation and its association with sociodemographic characteristics and health related behavior factors, home and school life characteristics, hopelessness, psychosocial stress and depression among some middle school students. The survey was administered to 975 middle school students in Gyeongin area during the period from May 1st to June 30th, 2013. The structured self-administered questionaires were delivered and they were collected without respondents'' personal information. The questionaires survey included sociodemographic characteristics and health related behavior factors, home and school life characteristics, hopelessness(BHOP), psychosocial stress(PWI), depression(CES-D) and suicide ideation(SSI). The major findings of the study are as follows: 1. The suicide ideation of respondents according to sociodemographic characteristics and health related behavior factors turned out to be significantly higher in following groups: female, short in stature, experience of smoking, experience of alcohol drinking, of which self recognized body type is fatty. In addition, the groups of concern of weight control with lost weight, without regular eating, lack hobbies & leisure life, and worse subjective health status, show their suicide ideation is higher. The suicide ideation of respondents according to home and school life characteristics turned out to be significantly higher in following groups: the group of parent present(single alive), that of bad economics status, that of no conversations with father, that of no conversations with mother, that of strict parental rearing attitudes, that of bad home atmosphere, that of low family life satisfaction, that of 2nd grade(yrs), that of low school record, that of bad relationship with the teacher, that of bad relationship with the friends, that of school violence experienced, that of school life dissatisfaction. Those groups show that the suicide ideation is higher. 2. The score of suicide ideation are significantly higher in severe hopelessness group(15 point and over at BHOP score), severe distress group(27 point and over at PWI) and depression group(16 point and over at CES-D score). 3. Concerning correlation of depression with various factors, while level of suicide ideation was positively correlated with hopelessness, psychosocial stress and depression, it was negatively correlated with height. 4. Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that the factors of influence with explanatory powers of 54.8% on suicide ideation included Sex, experience of alcohol drinking, hobbies & leisure life, subjective health status, grade, school violence experienced, hopelessness, psychosocial stress and depression. 5. With the analysis of covariance structure, hopelessness(BHOP) was more influential on the suicide ideation than psychosocial stress(PWI) and depression(CES-D). The study found the higher hopelessness, Severe distress and higher depression tends to increase suicide ideation. In conclusion, the results of the study indicate that middle school students'' suicide ideation is significantly related to hopelessness and levels of psychosocial stress and depression as well as sociodemographic characteristics and behavior factors related to health, home and school life characteristics. This study shows that there is difference from the influence of these factors about suicide ideation and relative importance level. The hopelessness and suicide ideation that a person experiences has a inseparable relation. Suicide ideation gets higher as the psychosocial stress and the level of stress that happen in their home and school life get serious. Therefore, to reduce the effective strategy for suicide ideation reduction among middle school students, the efforts to decrease hopelessness, depression level and psychosocial stress are required.
