The purpose of this study is to find out how the interpersonal communicative competence affects the situational communication apprehension and the work adjustment, and how the situational communication apprehension affects the work adjustment. Furthermore, the study was intended to analyze the mediating effects of the situational communication apprehension in the interaction between the international communication competence and the work adjustment in the office.
To fulfill the purpose of this study, factors that affect the research question are showed as the following:
First, how does the international communicative competence affect the situational communication apprehension?
Second, how does the interpersonal communicative competence affects the work adjustment?
Third, how does the situational communicative apprehension affects the work adjustment?
Fourth, what are the mediating effects that the situational communication apprehension has on the interaction between the interpersonal communicative competence and the work adjustment?
The subject in the study was based on the questionnaires of 376 office workers in various fields in all parts of Korea. (considering their occupations, ages, genders, and social statuses, and etc.) The communicative competence scale of Wiemann(1977) was used to measure the interpersonal communicative competence in this study. To measure the situational communication apprehension,
the communication apprehension scale of McCroskey(1993) was used. To measure work adjustment, Park’s work adjustment scale(2010) was used in this study. The scales used in the study satisfy the statistical confidence test The results of this study are showed in the following:
First, to analyze the relationship between the interpersonal communicative competence and the situational communication apprehension, the behavioral flexibility factor had negative influence on the situational communication apprehension and the affiliation/support also had negative influence on the situational communication apprehension of the conversation.
Second, the results of the analysis on the relationship between the interpersonal communicative competence and the work adjustment showed that all sub-ordinary variables had statically significant effects on the work adjustment.
The affiliation/support had bigger influence than the factors of behavioral flexibility and empathy.
Third, the result of the analysis of the relationship between the situational communication apprehension and the work adjustment, the situational communication apprehension in the presentation showed that it had negative influences on the work adjustment. The study showed that situational communication apprehension of conversation and situational communication apprehension of conversation meeting had no effect on the work adjustment.
Fourth, the results of the analysis of the mediating effects on the situational communication apprehension between the interpersonal communicative competence and the work adjustment showed that the situational communication apprehension of the presentation had the mediating effects on the interaction of interpersonal communicative competence and the work adjustment.
In conclusion, presentation skills are essential for work adjustment and for successful work life.
