Carbon-supported platinum (Pt/C) has been widely employed as a cathode catalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Although Pt among the elements on the earth is known to be the best for ORR , its ORR activity and durability should be improved for the commercialization of PEMFCs.
In this work, carbon-supported Pt-based catalyst with various ratios of metallic component were prepared by acid-leaching the heat-treated catalyst precursors, PtCux/C (x = 1, 3, 5) and (PtAux)1Cu3/C (x = 0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5). After acid-treatment, both series of catalysts presented a multiple core-shell structure. Acid-treated catalysts showed varied ORR performance depending on their composition. In case of acid-treated PtCux/C catalysts, the ORR performance was found to be improved with increasing Cu contents in catalyst precursor. Compared to a commercial Pt/C, acid-treated PtCux/C showed 2.3-fold enhanced ORR activities, while the improvement in their durabilities was negligible. The addition of Au was very effective to enhance the durability of catalyst, though there was the optimum amount of Au for the best ORR activity as well as durability. Among the catalysts tested in this study, PtAu0.3Cu3/C showed the best activity and durability.
