Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the characteristics of end-of-life sustaining treatment and attitudes towards Advance Directive among geriatric patients. Data were collected between October 30, 2012 and March 31, 2013. The elderly participants were 146 who were inpatients and outpatients of P university hospital. Methods: The questionnaire consists of characters related disease information, end-of-life sustaining treatment and attitudes towards advance directives. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 17. Results: The participants were in favor of advance directives. Although they preferred on CPR(78.8%), Pain control medication(74.0%), and they opposed to intervention of tracheostomy(96.6%), ventilator intervention(87.0%) among end-of-life sustaining treatment. Participants who either have family and acquaintances with CPR experience(t=2.14, p=.043), or have discussed with their family and acquaintances regarding the end-of-life sustaining treatment(t=3.29, p=.001), or already have decided to refuse the life sustaining treatment(t=3.18, p=.002) were more likely positive of advance directives than which did not. Conclusion: The study gives us the information about the status of geriatric patients towards end-of-life sustaining treatment and advance directives. The intervention program about advance directives for end-of-life is needed for geriatric patients on demand not only medical field but also local community.
