The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of neurofeedback (NFB) on attention in adults with ADHD and to compare the effects of NFB and cognitive behavior therapy(CBT).
Participants were 27 university students living in Busan city, 10 for NFB training group(experiment group), 8 for CBT group(comparison group) and 9 for no-treatment group. All participants were screened by Conners’ Adult ADHD Rating Scales(CAARS-K) and their scores of CARRS-K met the high-risk group of Adults ADHD.
All participants were assessed with 3 attention test, Trail Making Test, Digit span, Digit Symbol-coding. Both NFB and CBT group took electroencephalogram(EEG) measurement before and after training.
The results of this study are as follows. First, the score of CAARS-K decreased significantly in both NFB group and CBT group, but not in the no-treatment group. And the differences among 3 groups were significant. Second, The score of Digit span test increased significantly in NFB group, CBT, and no-treatment group. And the differences among 3 groups were significant. Third, the effects of improved attention remained after 5 weeks in both NFB and CBT group. Fourth, the significant changes of EEG were found in the NFB Group. The purpose of NFB training was aimed to decrease theta waves and increase low beta waves, ultimately decreasing theta to beta ratio. Significant EEG changes implies that NFB training improved the stability of brain function on the cerebral neurological level. Finally, implications, limitations, and suggestions for future study were discussed.
