Purpose This study was aimed to identify the terms and the expressions used by consumers to talk and by mediator to provide information about hypertension in the internet and suggest more understandable vocabulary for consumers. Method The study consisted of two steps. For the first step, vocabulary extraction and mapping, a researcher collected 974 archival postings related to 78 hypertension-related vocabularies written by consumers from five internet web sites for extracting consumer vocabulary and 135 documents written by hypertension-related information providers from five internet web sites for mediator vocabulary. Then, the consumer vocabulary with the same meaning as 78 hypertension-related vocabularies was extracted from postings or documents collected by two non-professional extractors and mediator vocabulary was extracted in the same way by a researcher. Both consumer vocabulary and mediator vocabulary related to hypertension manually mapped to the 78 hypertension-related representing vocabulary. Extracted terms and mapping results were reviewed by a healthcare professional. For the second step, selection of recommended vocabulary related to hypertension, the survey was conducted from 120 inpatients and 150 nurses from December 27, 2013 to December 31, 2013. The questionnaire which consisted of demographic data and vocabulary domain was separately developed for inpatients and nurses based on the mapped vocabularies. The survey data was analyzed using the SPSS win 19.0 program and included descriptive statistics. Based on the survey results, the recommended vocabularies related to hypertension were selected for lay persons. Result 67 consumer vocabularies and 73 mediator vocabularies were linked with the 78 hypertension-related representing vocabulary. Two vocabularies unmapped to both consumer and mediator vocabulary were ‘wheeze’ and ‘angioplasty’. 49 recommended vocabularies related to hypertension were selected for helping lay persons understand hypertension information. Conclusion The consumer-oriented vocabulary’s use might be significant in helping to overcome the vocabulary problem between non-professional and professional.
