The purpose of this study is to understand the effect of verbal violence, social support and coping patterns on the job stress for the operating room nurses and to improve their ability to cope with job stress.
The subjects for this study are total 230 nurses who were randomly selected from 9 general hospital having more than 200 sickbed in Seoul and agreed on participating in this study. The final collected questionnaire was 214.
Before starting the study, we collected the data after getting approval from Institutional Review Board(IRB approval : KHSIRB-12-017(RA)) to protect the subjects, Collecting data is implemented from April 1st to May 1st in 2013. Research tool consist of total 143 questions as 10 for general characteristic, 30 for job stress, 26 for verbal violence, 42 for social support and 35 for coping patterns. According to the purpose of study, collected data was reviewed for the real number and percentage, job stress based on the general characteristic, average and standard deviation, correlation coefficient between related factors and phased multiple regression analysis using SPSS 20.0 program.

The summary of study result is as below.

1. Job stress for the operating room nurses was 3.02±.47(in the 5-point scale) which is above the average. It was also indicated as verbal violence from doctor was 2.50±.66(in the 5-point scale) and 2.29±.67(in the 5-point scale) from nurse, and social support from co-worker was 3.28±.67(in the 5-point scale) and 2.91±.71(in the 5-point scale) from superior.
In coping patterns, active coping patterns was 2.65±.40(in the 4-point scale) and passive coping patterns was 2.17±.38(in the 4-point scale).

2. As a result of analysing the correlation among job stress, verbal violence, social support and coping patterns, it was found that job stress has the positive correlation(r=.56∼.58, p<.01) with verbal violence from doctor and nurse and the negative correlation(r=-.24∼-.40, p<.01) with the social support from superior and co-worker and the active coping patterns.

3. The most influencing factors on job stress for the operating room nurses was the verbal violence from doctor(β=.35), and when it comes out as a social support from co-worker(β=-.22) and the verbal violence from nurse(β=.27), the job stress of operating room nurse was explained as 43%(F=54.76, p<.001).

Through this study result, it was revealed that the verbal violence from both doctor and nurse influence the job stress of the operating room nurse, and also the social support from the superior and co-worker and the active coping patterns are related to the job stress. As the demand of effective nursing service from the operating room nurse is increasing, their job stress related to the increasing demand is shown also higher. But the stress management program for the operating room nurse is still inadequate so it is needed that the effective coping program should be developed and provided through the accurate analysis on the job stress from verbal violence.
