A series of unsymmetrical squaraine near-infrared (NIR) sensitizers (SGT201-204) with variable π-bridge unit were synthesized and applied for dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Four sensitizers with extended system such as thiophenyl, bithiophenyl and fuzed-thiophenul groups were selected as electron-rich heterocyclic components and used to link to the squaraine core and phenothiazine unit as electron-donating group. SGT-204 sensitizer incorporates more strongly accepting cyanoacrylic acid group as a surface-anchoring group instead of a directly attached carboxylic acid as well as more red-shift of the absorption maximum. The sensitizers exhibited intense absorption in the NIR region and strong luminescence. The SGT-sensitizers had similar HOMO levels but LUMO levels were gradually at lower energies owing to the lowing of the band-gaps of the sensitizers by extended π-conjugation system. The photovoltaic performances based on newly developed the sensitizers show significantly wide spectral response including the NIR region and JSC of 6.0 mA cm-2, a VOC of 448V, and a FF of 0.73 corresponding to an overall conversion efficiency (η) of 2.0%.
